Fibre Broadband

I currently get about 2.0 mb on standard BB with EE. Fibre BB is now available and have been offered a deal at 38.0 mb but for a few quid more 76.0 mb. Question is.... will there be a major difference between 38 and 76 ? Will be worth the extra? Cheers folks.

Bit late to answer you because you've likely already upgraded, but unless you've got a household which is streaming large amounts of porn ( or standard visual stuff ) at the same time, you're unlikely to notice the difference between 38 and 76.

The thing is, most of these fibre connections are not actually fibre all the way to your property, I think only about 3% of fibre connections go all the way to your door

IMO, No, I stand to be corrected but, other factors like - in simple terms - how near / far from / to your modem the fibre terminates will affect your final speed.

Also on a personal note, I've been told that it doesn't matter if 1 person or 100 people use it the speed should be the same and any price related speed difference is plain gouging by your provider...but what you gonna do?

will watch this space as fibre is mere weeks away from Degsy Towers.

Just done a speed test on my copper line in the Brisbane burbs
DL 14.98
UL 0.89
Latency 17ms
Jitter 3ms

@Dylan; Or anybody, can you translate? - does that test thing of yours work?

I just got a letter from Virgin Media they have upped my broadband from 50 Mb/s to 70 free of charge
i reckon they are about to put the price up

The last bit on BT Infinity lines is copper, so, to some extent, it depends how far away you are from the cabinet ( I think the techie acronym they use is FTTC - Fibre To The Cabinet ).

Do a search under 'Australian nbn failure'

After 46Billion and many years here's where we're up to.
I lived 12Km from the centre of Brisbane and still as of 3 mths ago no fibre

The expectation is now you'll be lucky to get fibre to the pavement out side your house, FTTP.

A little extract -
...'Under the policy, customers are not allowed to use more than 150GB a month, separated into 75GB off-peak between 1am and 7am and 75GB on peak.

The maximum download speed on the service is restricted to 25 megabits a second'

LOL@you and your backward ways Skippy.
I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry about it.
The whole 'Fibre' scheme (and as a wise man once told me - behind every scheme is a schemer) besides being a political football, has been a total lash up from day one. With the cost being managed up while the product quality (mps) has and is, still being managed down.

Gist; It was paid for by 'public funds' - but the public don't 'own' it ala British Gas, thus when the assets or shares are sold off can't
participate / profit.
But all the assets ( the actual BB) will, has, is being flogged off to the ISP's, who will/do charge you extra for a less than bog standard minimum mps.

my ISP will then want to charge me 20% more for a whole (in theory...{it will be interesting, via a speed test, to see what it actually averages out at }) 25mps where I already have 15 (wow) or even more for the basic minimum that was promised a few years ago.

The 'parent' NBNCo. sent me a letter, NBN coming to you soon ( see your IPS). There was a FAQ section -
Q) do I have to sign up.
A) Yes.
Fact) No you don't; the IPS's have to keep the copper going in tandem for 18mths - well not for 18mths.
Fact) The Govt. just placed a 15%(?) 'tax / surcharge' on the copper system - which the IPS's can and will pass on. To encourage people to go straight on to the fibre deals

you couldn't make it up.

Fume off the scale.
