West Ham United will not be able to buy Andy Carroll due to Financial Fair Play regulations, says Sam Allardyce
Sam Allardyce, the West Ham United manager, believes that any attempts to sign Andy Carroll on a permanent contract from Liverpool might be scuppered following the implementation of next season’s Premier League Financial Fair Play regulations.
The England striker, scorer of six goals in his past 10 appearances, has established himself as a popular figure with West Ham supporters during his season-long loan at Upton Park.
It has been reported that Liverpool are ready this summer to offload the most expensive British footballer in history for about half of the £35million they paid Newcastle United in January 2011.
However, the West Ham manager has revealed that a prospective deal to retain the 24-year-old long term appears increasingly unlikely because of the enhanced financial rules that will come in to force ahead of the 2013-14 season.
When asked on Monday about his chances of signing Carroll, Allardyce said: “The hardest thing is the overall package, the overall negotiation which needs to go on to make sure it can be sustainable in terms of what we can do. But I will still point towards the financial restrictions being implemented – they could blow the whole deal in one go. Financially you are restricted to be able to do it.
“So, in one fell swoop the financial restrictions mean Andy Carroll can’t sign for us from Liverpool because it’s too expensive, even if he wanted to. Even if I wanted him, even if the chairmen wanted him, even if we all wanted him – which we do – it will not be allowed to happen.”
Seems like a good way to drive the price down.
