...loved the part where they broke down their system. So my immediate thought is we should play this way. If we can pick up a pacy winger, we would have the attacking fullbacks to pull this off (if we moved Coleman to RB).

"Garrido's favored formation is best described as a cross between an old-fashioned 4-4-2 and a South American 4-2-2-2. The wide players -- interiores -- have a responsibility to defend the wide zones and protect their fullbacks when Villarreal is without the ball. But when the Yellow Submarine wins the ball, Cani and Santi Cazorla scamper into the middle of the pitch into central playmaking roles, providing obvious forward passes for the central midfielders and the back four and dragging the opposition fullbacks out of place.

That leaves Villarreal with little width in midfield, but this problem is solved because Joan Capdevila and Angel Lopez play extremely attack-minded fullback roles, stretching the play. In the 4-2 defeat to Real Madrid this past weekend, Lopez was up against Cristiano Ronaldo. Any other right back would have decided to play a more conservative role against one of the world's best attackers, but Lopez spent the first half bombing up the touchline and instigating fast breaks down the flank. Real didn't know how to cope".

DO IT MoYleZ!!!

Neville will still be first choice RB though, when fit. After that - Hibbert; after that - (possibly) Coleman, i guess.

I'm putting this into action in Football Manager tonight. Nice find here =)

I'm always impressed watching Villareal play. Nilmar and Rossi are a great pairing too

My first thoughts was if it wasn't for that pesky hat trick then Villareal had them right where they wanted them but someone beat me to it.

That's the equivalent of saying the opposing defense just couldn't stop the Yak as he terrorized the opponents with 4 point blank misses.

Well Mourinho admitted Villareal should have been up 3-1 at the break. A more precise quote would have been "they didn't know how to cope in the first half". The article goes on to explain that the special one made some adjustments at halftime, but keep in mind Villareal are third in the table. Like I said they don't play Real every week.

You don't have to change formations to be more adventuerous you just have to get people in the box. We've turned into a poor man's Arsenal in which against "less talented" squads we're content to pass ourselves right into a 1-1/0-0 draw

Also I'm not sure why so many people are in a rush to get Coleman into the back line. He's fine right where he is and probably better as a winger. So far his best trait is getting into the box and scoring and or creating goals. Last I checked getting anyone in the box is what we've sorely been lacking here. The farther back he is the more defenders he has to take on (or will try to take on) and the more exposed we will be defensively.

Good article, but it should be pointed out that Capdevila is probably the best fullback in Spain, and Lopez is only slightly less good than him. Plus of course they were able to roam up and down the line for most of that game because neither of the Real wide players (CR7 and Di Maria) tracked back, and the fullbacks (Sergio Ramos and Marcelo) arent exactly uberdefensive either, in the first half especially they got ragged all over the place.

Basically it is a good system because of the players that work in it.

Doesnt take away the fact that he scored a hat trick though, and seeing the goals none of them were hard goals for him any other player in his position would of scored atleast the 2/3.

I am sorry, but you didn't understand too much from this article - Villarreal doesn't use wingers in their system, they use versatile attacking midfielders behind strikers. And neither Borja or Cazorla or Cani are particularly pacy.

Angel is very average player (huge gap between him and Capdevilla), definitely the weak point of Yellow Submarine starting XI.

It's totally opposite - it's winger who has to have an ability to take on defenders in 1 on 1 situations, full backs usually attacks space opened by players ahead of them. Still not 100% comfortable with Coleman as wide midfielder, for me he is still a RB for the future.

The article mentioned how much ground they have to cover to attack in the middle and then cover the wing on defense. I assumed pace would be a benefit in this type of system that being the case.

there were also some questionable calls in favor of Real Madrid that match that might not have been mentioned.
