Is this why people get so worked up about the idea of moving to kirkby?

Kirkby isn't exactly the rival city though that adjoins.

I had no idea there was a rivalry between Salford and Manchester. Is that just because they're near each other or is there some long winded story that somebody made up like the silk and port thing of liverpool and manchester which is just silly?

well the city centres are about 2 miles apart, definate boundary drawn long ago, Salford is in Gtr. Manchester though. Folk are very insistent on being from one and not the other.
