Family Holiday in August

Probably, but with some legwork and flexibility surely it's possible. For instance, Google tells me that you can buy flights on Norwegian round trip between LGW to OAK for under $700 USD (surely under £600?; no taxes and fees) from August 3 (Thursday) to 12 (Tuesday). BA/Finnair is just above $800 USD for the same ticket.
Norwegian is a decent airline too. Flown with them to New York, very pleased with the standard.

The wife seems to be onboard with the driving idea. I'm dead set on it now. Might make the journey down a 3 day trip and have a couple of nights in a decent hotel on the way.

Driving through France is lovely. The toll roads are worth every penny, and then some. Mrs. Tree and I have driven from Dieppe to St. Tropez and it was a doddle - we will definitely do it again.

No idea on prices including kids but how about touring parts of California?

There are natural parks like Yosemite, theme parks round LA, sights and shopping in San Francisco, river rafting and panning for gold in Gold Country, scenic coastal drives and beaches, Lake Tahoe - basically whatever your family likes there is an area that will make them happy and if you pick say four bases everyone can get to do something that suits.
Yosemite is incredible. I went in May a few years ago, but I'd imagine it's a lot more chocker in the summer, and so probably less enjoyable

The valley can be very busy and it can also be too hot for my preference. However a lot of the trails aren't too bad once you walk a bit in as there are quite a few people who are on day trips and haven't the time/energy for a little longer walk, especially if you head to Tuolumne meadows.

May is my favourite time as the waterfalls are at their best but tbh it is a gob-smackingly beautiful place whenever you visit!

I went in December many years ago, stayed at the Bug hostel on the way into the park. It was class. Snowed during the night so it was a winter wonderland on the morning, then it all thawed and it was verdant green in the afternoon. So good.

Come to Ireland. It's like Britain, except colder and less to do. You can explore Dublin in about 20 minutes and see our incredible range of overhyped rocks and natural features because of our historic inability to build anything iconic.

Then, to top it all off, you can do the Dawn Of The Dead tour in Kells. No, it wasn't filmed there, but it's the closest you'll ever get to walking around a town infested with mutant zombies
