There are people who are born, live and die on the falklands now. It is they that must decide sovereignty not geographical circumstance. Only a referendum of the people should see Argentina take over these islands.

Argentina had several centuries to settle on the islands, but they didn't. Now that there's oil there and its a good subject to bring up during economic recession and to deflect criticism from the poor governing of the country, we get this dreary sabre rattling every six months.

How we'll defend them without an aircraft carrier is anyone's guess though.

I suggest Bin laden style helicopter sorties of the SAS into Buenos Airies, to give a slap to whichever daft politicians keep bringing it up.

I thought the ark royal had been disbanded and we were waiting on the new aircraft carrier that when its finally built will have only helicopters until the new fighter planes come along.

The falklands looks more like Scotland, windswept and rainy with a few sheep clinging on for dear life, whilst everyone leers at each others cousins.

Not that they do that last bit in scotland.

I went to see the Las Malvinas Memorial while I was in Buenos Aires for my honeymoon. It was guarded by ceremonially dressed soldiers who stared quietly back at me. I felt very sad and slightly ashamed, somehow.
