I guess the argument is that the carbon footprint from holding the events is so insignificant in the grand scale of things that there is an overall net positive from holding the events purely from the attention they apparently bring to global warming etc.

The cars sound absolutely pathetic though, just like Formula E.

i get your sentiment, but a lot of innovation comes from the racing series. Lots of those little technological advancements that eventually end up in road cars were pioneered in a racing series, and I am sure that the e-racing categories will be the same.
