External hard drive kaput...

He backed it up on an external hard drive lad

Then he wouldn't need to recover as the originals would be on the PC itself...RAID 1 at a minimum if you're that worried about losing stuff.

Will give this a try in a few days when my new HD arrives:

Buy a second HD so you can back it up, Cloud back up is great but only if your primary is constantly online allowing the back up to be automatic, otherwise you'll simply forget to keep backing up after a a few weeks.

Definitely RAID it if you don't have an auto back up strategy.

I've got my primary data on my HD, a complete clone of the HD on an external drive (automated daily), and a cloud back up of my important data - again automated daily). Once bitten twice shy and all that.

Well, I actually meant housing your backup on a RAID setup...good use for an old PC.

CD's are the way forward. One might go missing or get damaged but they never all self destruct at the same time.
No need to thank me, this advice is on the house.

As far as the HD goes. It depends what's wrong with it. Normally you can just unplug 'em, wire 'em into another unit and get the data off. Problems with external drives are likely to be more fundamental though. I hope it pulls through for you but, if not, then RIP HD. Remember the good times when it spun for you at 7200rpm and try to forget the grating sound of it's final failure.

The problem with CD back ups are they require manual intervention. I've not found that many people are that good at doing manual back ups, and the key thing with a failure is that you can never predict when it's going to happen. Automating a back up means at worst you're only going to lose a few hours worth of data.

Thought mine was bust a bit back, it was 'clicking' and not working, it had been left on and I reckon it was just overheating as if it's left on it sometimes does it still, if it's one with it's own power and fan then the arl hoover on the vents trick will make sure it's getting plenty of air.

I never wipe camera mem cards, they cost feck all and remain as a backup of all the kids pics. All the music & movies were 'transferred' onto there anyway from the High Seas, would be a pain like if it stuffed up but since the time I thought it was I've ensured that there's a separate back up of anything I wouldn't want to lose permanently.
