Right, I'm going to have a shot at building a PC next week from scratch.

There's a few requirements. First, I don't care about sound, so the budget sound card is more than adequate. Second, I want a modern PC that runs games well but it doesn't have to be "top end".

These are the components I have so far, buying from Novatech.

CASE - Galaxy III - £32.99
PROCESSOR - AMD Quad Core Phenom II X4 965 3.4GHZ - £107.99
MOTHERBOARD - ASUS M4A78LT-M AMD 760G - £49.99
MEMORY - Corsair XMS3 4GB (2X2GB) DDR3 1600MHZ DUAL - £39.98
STORAGE - Samsung Spin Point F3 SATAII 1TB 32MB Cache Hard Drive <8.9ms 7200rpm - £40.98
GFX - XFX ATI Radeon 5770 XXX 1024MB GDDR5 PCI-Express - £104.99

TOTAL: £376.92

My budget is £350.

I'm wondering if anyone has any replacements I should consider for the spec above. Also, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me whether the above looks about right, and if I'm missing anything important!

Last thing, the graphics card and optical drive are missing as I'm using the ones I have in my old PC to plug into the new one :) However, if you know of a decent GFX card for under £100, let me know.

Cheers!

That all looks good, although I would wack a little more on the gfx card...that is gonna be the decider to being a poor, good or great gaming system. There are plenty of budget solutions out there for the price you are after but none of them are gonna give good performance in games, you will be running at low res with all the features turned off.

one big disk? why not 2x1tb 7200rpm's?

I didn't know I could :) Will consider it. To be honest, 1TB is more than enough so I might just get a quality, smaller hard drive.

The games I play don't really rely on top end video performance; they actually rely more on the cores and RAM (FM for instance). You're right though, and I'll probably invest in one at a later date.

Monitor, keyboard and mouse?

A desk to put it on? Chair?

Should have said - these are all coming from my existing PC :P

I'm wondering about things like SATA (which I actually don't know anything about or what they do) and cooling... whether these days I actually need a certain something to add to the "basics" of a system.

Knocks £20 off the price and adds towards a GFX budget I guess, plus it's quicker memory retrieval. Good call Bryan.

Drinks holder?
