Expectations placed on young(er) players - did Rooney make it hard for subsequent talent?

I'd like to open up discussion on the expectations placed on our younger players.

There's sometimes flurry of excitement in some quarters after a decent initial appearance or two (off the top of my head Barkley, Davies and Nkounkou in recent times).

Frequently there's an awful lot of criticism if they don't hit the ground running Mykolenko, Patterson), or, they show flaws in their game (Davies, Gordon, DCL, Barkley, Rodwell).

Rooney seemed the exception. A once in a generation talent snaffled quickly. Do we think Rooney has made it difficult for subsequent talent to shine? Or have we always been an impatient fanbase?

Hello sir thank you for raising this most interesting point. I am particularly interested in the notion that the Goodison crowd have keen distaste for young scouse players wearing the shirt of Everton. I’ve seen some say they actively write them off to destroy player’s confidence with no patience and over expectation until said player is ruined.

The problem is we have never had decent enough senior players to carry/help youngsters, so when they're in the team they're expected to perform because of the gash they normally have around them. Gordon a prime example from last season.

I believe that's why we overhype our youngsters when they break through.

The fanbase isn't impatient. The fanbase, in general, hypes our players - and especially home-grown players who, very often, just aren't worthy of the nonsense spouted by the fans. If a young player has a few good games, he is built up into "our future" when, in reality, he just had a couple of good games. As players do.

We've been so starved of genuine quality over the last 30 years (where, objectively, only Beardsley, Kanchelskis (for six months), Rooney (for five minutes), and Lukaku were any great shakes) that we put the likes of Tom Davies on a platform if he has a performance while breaking through. Even good players like Richarlison are heralded as world-beaters when they are nothing of the sort. Our effective, quietly excellent players, like Speed, Arteta, Baines, and Cahill have been about as good as it gets for Evertonians over the last 30 years. But they lacked the fantasy that the Evertonian craves. That's a vacuum that the next bright young thing quickly falls into.

There were plenty before Rooney, look at the likes of; Michael Branch, Danny Cadamateri, Francis Jeffers, we always seemed to have a young striker coming through the academy, most of them came to nothing, but it was easier for a young striker to get over hyped, they could come on with 10 minutes to go, chasing a game and have a bit of pace and enthusiasm and have an influence on the outcome, score a goal, get an assist, etc. it’s harder if your left back.

The sky sports generation has made people quick to label players a “flop” or a “star”, also the internet gives every meff a platform. Years ago some people would have been sat alone in their house, now they are creating multi accounts on GOT to slag off Tom Davies.

If these players went on to perform else where I would agree. Fact is that we haven’t had enough coming through that would impact the first team.
The premier league with all its foreign stars is increasingly more difficult to make the grade.
The championship is prob the grade where of where Everton and the premier league was in 1992. If we were still at the level we would have seen more players making the grade.

Jeffers dropped the ball. He was quality and his failing was due to his application not ability.
