From a fans perspective let's build up a bit of a background to some of our less talked about past players so that they're more than a name with stats.

I was only a kid when he played for us so tell us about what he was like, who is was similar to in the modern game, any good goals or memorable moments he had, what is he like as a person, what was his player song.

Go.

George is on twitter - https://twitter.com/EFCTELF he's not long had a hip replacement, I've never met him, but he seems a likeable and humble person.

He was a flying winger who scored a few goals in his day - I remember the song, Georgie, Georgie Telfer, Georgie Telfer on the wing.

I think his most memorable moment was overshadowing the then British record transfer Bob Latchford on his début, by scoring two goals away to West Ham (in typical Everton style they went from being 2-0 up to losing 4-3)

He lived just behind our school, apparently, in Huyton. He came to the school fete (it must have been about 1973/4?). I won the prize for baking the best scones. Honest. I shook George's hand and he gave me whatever the prize was. Things were never quite the same again for either of us.

I'm more interested in what school.

He seemed to get progressively worse like the opposition had sussed him out. He had a weird gait on him like Chris Waddle. Looked very laboured in his running (even walking). He was a useful player and on his day was very good but as I say IMO he just faded away and became dross.

Scored one of the best I've ever seen at Stoke, probably around '73. I remember him cutting in from the left, beating 3 men and hitting an absolute cracker from outside the box. Problem is, I haven't seen it since, match wasn't televised, so I don't know how accurate my memory is. I always thought he had the ability to be an ideal second striker, but injuries and a lack of belief ended his career.

....remember him well and your description of a Chris Waddle gait is accurate. Saying that he didn't have anywhere near the same quality as Waddle.

He lived in the old Huyton with Roby area now Liverpool 14 - My father in law lived not far from him always had a ball at his feet even in the streets in that area probably went to Malvern Junior school as a youngster - I seen him play under Gordon Lee - a fast Burly winger with an eye for goal transferred abroad I think - not the worst EFC player, but a steady hard grafter with a good cross and shot on him.

Do you still bake scones though?

Saw the moment that brought his fledging career to an end. Like many players, especially local lads who broke
Into the first team in the mid to late 70s they were compared unfavourably with the golden generation of 1970. George was coming into decent form as a wide attacker and was nearly broken in two by a Sunderland defender whose name escapes me. We won the game from a Ronnie goodlass corner but george was never the same again.... And no one else would have been either, made schumachers challenge on batistton look like a simple shoulder barge.

Yes, I remember that goal at Stoke as well. Fantastic goal from a player with ability but lacked consistency. After finishing his playing career due to injury, he worked for many years for the MYA looking after their football venues etc. A really decent fella and good Evertonian!
