Everton's Best Domestic Cup Season for 32 years

I think it signifies more than that. Trying to fight on all fronts is something that's been lacking for years. Moyes was always focussed on his post Everton career and would usually sacrifice the cups in order to preserve the squad for the league. Martinez did so last season when he focussed on the PL and EL.

They are our two most realistic routes to silverware and I think it's unforgivable when they dont get full attention and effort.

Good point dave, but you've buried the lede. Better popcorning, tbf...

(+points for best GOT use of socratic method in recent memory, though)

SF run and another (at least) to come we all hope.

A manager of a club like Palace yesterday stated he'd have taken your hand off if at the season's start he'd have been given top half PL place and a cup QF.

Obviously we're after more than that lot, but two SF spots and a place in the top half would defo be a creditable season for us and a good staging post for next season.

I can't see how you can equate cup runs with the league. Are you saying you would consider it a success if we got to the semi-final of each cup competition by beating teams from outside the top two divisions. Say we got thinned by Championship sides in the semi-finals, would we celebrate our cup runs.
Cup competitions are very subjective, yes they are good for confidence and the fans, I would dearly love to see Everton getting to the final of this season's FA Cup but I would rather finish in the top 4 than get beaten in the final.
If we finish in the bottom half of the league and win the cup then, due to the fact that we have won something, then it is a successful season. If we lost in the final and finished in the bottom half then no, cup runs don't mean success, in my opinion.

When it comes to cups, I agree.

A successful cup run is one that culminates in a trophy.
Have to disagree.
Sure, the top 4 is a draw, but isn't the league just a 38 game cup competition? Thus, 19 teams a year fail?

Not being funny, genuinely interested.

This does my head in. A thread where we can all be rightly proud this season of the progress made BY OUR TEAM and some would rather run it down because of some perverse pleasure at dragging them down.

Have a word with yourselves. It looks absolutely terrible.

@Groucho or other mod: can you lock this thread, please? Maybe open it after we get a result against Chelsea and really ram home this point about the season being more than just the PL campaign? I think if a Wembley trip is secured it might focus more minds to start taking these cups seriously and open to discussion about them rather than acting like a smug arsehole and looking to derail the discussion. Your choice like. I'll go with your decision.

To a degree yes, but what do you get for getting to the QF? Nowt.

What do you get for 4th and above? CL. What do you get for 5/6th? EL.

Now I think we should aim for 1st, but if you aim for 1st and don't quite reach it, there are at least benefits ie. European qualification.

Come 3rd in a cup and you get nothing.

Karl Marx, your final question, who won the Cup Final in 1949?

Karl: The workers' control of the means of production? The struggle of the urban proletariat?

Presenter: No. It was in fact, Wolverhampton Wanderers who beat Leicester 3-1.

(Cut to stock film of goal bring scored in a big football match. Roar from crowd. Stock footage of football crowds cheering.)

Voice Over: and CAPTION: 'IN WORLD FORUM TODAY: KARL MARX, CHE GUEVARA, LENIN AND MAO TSE-TUNG. NEXT WEEK, FOUR LEADING HEADS OF STATE OF THE AFRO-ASIAN NATIONS AGAINST BRISTOL ROVERS AT MOLINEUX'

I'll lock it by all means, but for me mate, a successful cup run means winning it.

2009 was a failure, as was 1968.

I'm not trying to do this seasons efforts down at all, merely saying that reaching the semi of the LC simply isn't success. Hopefully the FA Cup will yield a trophy win, because I'm not happy to be runner up.

If you want it reopened please let me know.
