Everton v Birmingham
For all their woes this season, that win over Manchester City put Everton within six points of high-flying, Champions League playing Spurs. A side they’ll play after a run of three very winnable games, starting at home to Birmingham before trips to West Ham and Stoke. If they can beat City on their home turf, then nowhere will worry the Everton players. One good win doesn’t a season make though and David Moyes needs to have his players focused on following up that result with another three points against Birmingham.
It’s surprising to see the midlanders as far down the table as they are but not so surprising when you spot their away record. No wins and just five points from eight games is the form of a side you would expect to see in the relegation zone at the end of the season. Alec McLeish should turn it around but if he can’t address that away form it’s going to be a lot more difficult. They have managed creditable draws away to Man City and Fulham in their last four away games but both of these sides have something of a taste for stalemates and lost away to Wolves and Stoke in the other two games. Birmingham were especially poor last time out against Wolves so David Moyes will be thinking of nothing but how to secure the win.
With Pienaar expected back from injury the Everton manager will have all his attacking options available to him. Minus the suspended Anichebe. The front men in particular may not all be on top form but between Saha, Yakubu and Beckford it’s surely just a matter of time before one of them hits a bit of form. Until they do though, Tim Cahill remains the best bet for an Everton goal at 5/1 to score first and 13/8 to score anytime. Given the type of game this is likely to be set-pieces will offer both sides goal-scoring opportunities and it may be worth a small bet on someone like Distin or Jagielka to make their way for a corner and open the scoring. Both are 33/1 to score first so you don’t need to risk much.
Birmingham’s last two performances have been poor and Goodison Park isn’t somewhere Alec McLeish will be looking forward to visiting in their current form. The home win at 8/13 may be too short for some whilst Everton -1 goal at 9/5 may be too much of a risk. A correct score bet is the way to go with Everton 1-0 at 9/2 and Everton 2-1 at 7/1. As long as they can take a chance or two then Everton’s revival will be on as David Moyes looks forward to a happier new year.
