The rain, it raineth every day
Browsing through the Blue Correspondent website, due to insomnia, I came across a report detailing an annual end of season cricket match, featuring players from both us and the others.

It triggered something in my memory that we used to still play matches of this kind in the 1970's. Can somebody enlighten me, or has decrepitude set in, and in five years' time I'll be eating rusks softened by unsweetened tea.

We used to play cricket against Bootle CC the friday before the season started in the sixties, remember it well, one of the only things I do remember from then

Seem to remember Lineker scoring a lot of runs, must have been in 86.

... seem to recall he was a useful cricketer and snooker player. Phil Neville apparently played for Lancashire 2nd X1.

Like me, you probably remember the days when quite a few footballers enhanced their earning playing cricket in the summer. I recall Geoff Hurst playing for Essex, Jimmy Coombes was a wicket keeper as was Steve Orozivic (minor counties I think), Chris Balderstone played against us for Carlisle and was a first class cricketer (umpired as well I think). There were lots of them, not sure if Everton had many cricketers, good quiz question.

From what I remember they stopped them during the 80's due to a big fuss made by the Kopites after a 7 wicket defeat.

The kopites felt aggrieved by some of the decisions that went in our favour.

IIRC Rush and Thompson were given out NBW(nose before wicket) to balls from around the wicket that kept low.

Lawrenson was sent from the field of play after shining a ball on his groin for 30 minutes and singing I'm going to Otterspool in a merment.

Grobellaar the clown was lauded for his behaviour, and told there's always a place for cheats and spot fixers in Cricket, his response was"so long as there's no blicks i'm happy", at which point Clive Lloyd chased him around the pavilion with a cricket bat.

Harry Makepeace and Jack Sharp both played for Lancashire and England at cricket and Everton.

I can remember the annual Bootle fixtures and the one-off game at Old Trafford in the late 60s or early 70s but I can't recall us ever playing the rS.
