Player Valuation: £40m
Just talking about the team rather than the club more generally at the moment.

Strengths
  • A settled defensive unit (including 'keeper and holding midfielders)
  • One of the best set-piece takers in the league (Baines)
  • One of the joint-highest assist providers in the league (Mirallas is equal with Rooney and Gerrard on 5)
  • Joint-fifth highest scorer in the division (Lukaku is level with Giroud and Van Persie on 7)
  • Fewer defeats than any team in the Premier League (1).
  • In the Premier League's Fantasy Football Howard is the top-ranked 'keeper, Baines is the highest-scoring defender (followed by Jagielka in 4th and Coleman in 7th) and Mirallas scores just a point fewer than Ozil.
  • We've salvaged 5 points from losing positions, which is only bettered by Villa, United and Chelsea.
  • Three players have scored after being subbed on by Martinez. Pellegrini and Jol are the only managers with better records.
  • Liverpool and West Brom are the only teams whose defenders have contributed more goals and assists.
  • Howard is the best penalty stopper with a 2/3 success rate.
  • We have the fourth most experienced squad in the league behind United, Chelsea and West Ham.

Weaknesses
  • At least twice as many draws (6) as anyone in the top half bar Southampton.
  • Only Spurs and Southampton have scored fewer than us (17) in the top 10.
  • Only United have conceded more than us (13) in the top 7.
  • Two of our first team regulars (Barry and Lukaku) are only on loan.
  • According to Transfermarkt we only average 45% possession, which leaves us 12th behind Newcastle and Fulham.
  • The same source claims that we're middling in front of goal too, only converting 17% of shots on goal compared with 24% for City and Arsenal.
  • Our midfielders have contributed 4 goals and 4 assists compared to City at the top with 12/15 and Palace at the bottom with 2/4.

Threats
  • Baines going to United.
  • Distin retiring.
  • Lack of cover for Lukaku and Barkley.
  • Inability to defend set-pieces.
  • Inability to break down stubborn defences.
  • Over-reliance on very young players (Lukaku and Barkley).

Opportunities
  • Less fear of rivals.
  • More tactical sophistication.
  • Opportunity to show Barca, City and Chelsea that we can be trusted with loanees.
  • No need to sell and presumably money available for transfers.
  • Improved competition for places.
  • More opportunity for youth players (eg. Duffy, Junior, Garbutt and Lundstram) to gain first team experience.
  • More games for players such as Hope and Long at U21 level because of senior players rarely featuring.
  • More chances for young players to progress into the first-team squad.

It's just a starting point. Feel free to add your own.

Great analysis Billy.

We've got to go for it this season. It could be argued it's balls or bust in the January window. It's pessimistic I admit, but potentially:

-Lukaku, Barry, Deulofeu loans end and leave
-Baines sold to United
-Barkley off to Europe (probably not likely)
-Howard, Distin, Pienaar close to retirement (but probably not imminent)

That's 8 players gone. If we sell there'll be funds to rebuild, but only in a relatively short time period.

It's horrible to talk like this as it's the business side of watching boss togga. But Martinez will be aware. We'll see what he's got.

barkley off to europe, wot do you mean by that?

It could help us too that almost all our rivals (except Liverpool, Southampton and Newcastle) are likely to be playing European football until March.

There's no chance we only average 45% possession, surely?

Still, great thread, but just can't think that stats is right!

It surprised me too. I've just had a look on Squawka (which I think is more reliable) and they have us down as 54% compared to Arsenal (53%) and City (56%). That sounds more like it.

Great post mate.

I'm shocked by those possession stats too. I know we've had games like spurs this season where we've barely seen the ball, and that's where the figure comes from maybe, but to be behind Fulham and Newcastle in relative terms?

We def need to beat stoke. We've played well but drawn too many on the bounce now and I think a lot of us are being distracted by how well we are playing or the occasion (the derby).

What we need now is 3 points, and I'd take a very dull 1-0 (og off a defenders back side) on saturday, just to get us back on track.
