Everton have signed Oldham youth team goalkeeper Chris Renshaw on a three-year contract.

The 18-year-old, who had been with the Latics from the age of 11, without making a competitive appearance for them, will go into the Toffees’ Under-21 squad.

Renshaw: “This is a step up but I’m looking forward to it. For me, this year is a development stage, so it’s about trying to get that regular football in the Under-21s”

To be fair what are the chances of a young keeper making it here? Name one young keeper that really made it without a huge slice of luck? Hart being the exception to the rule as he got lucky to be on loan whilst city were going through changes so they opted with him, i.e slice of luck?

I mean we have had half decent keepers before but they all leave to play first team football. Even now we are signing a new number 1 which if they stay similar to howard, it makes it harder to break a young keeper into the first team without them sitting on the bench most of the time.

Jack Butland springs to mind mate ?

He was signed though, he didn't come through at stoke.

That is my general point, it is very rare for a club to bring a young keeper through their academy, no matter how good they are. Thinking on, didn't hart get signed as well just before he started getting loaned out?

So yeah, as much as i would love to see a keeper come through and be brilliant, it is a very rare scenario that sees it happen. Perhaps Arsenal have had one over the last 10 years? Only team i can think of possibly doing it

Phew, I was starting to worry , when we let Stanek and O'Loughin go we were down to about 9 young GKs. It's bizarre that we should sign another and no senior GK coach in place. Hewelt was the main GK for the u21s and O'Loughlin for u18s last season. They dominated appearances and the other GKs got very few games and that's a big problem as lower teams don't want to take an inexperienced GK on loan.

The U21s need goalkeepers too, though. He may or may not make it to first team, but for the lad, this is a chance to develop and see where his career takes him.

Aye. What i mean is the constant signing of them the club seems to do. One every year, not a transfer window without signing a young goalkeeper.

As much as the u21 need goalkeepers, they don't need 5 of them, in any scenario it is odd why we keep signing so many young ones when he benefit very little from having them.

Best of luck to the young lad. Knows he needs to develop, so hopefully he develops into world class keeper please :D
