Andrew Johnson’s 10th goal of the season secured 3 points in a scrappy encounter at the Stadium of Light.

In a poor first half, Tim Cahill’s header was deflected onto the post by a Sunderland player in what was the only real chance.

Everton, who seemed to have a grip on the game and were never really pressured, found them selves in front, 14 minutes into the 2nd half through Andy Johnson.

Mikel Arteta who started the game after being sidelined for a number of weeks, crossed for AJ to head (upper arm) home.

16 year old Jack Rodwell made his first ever league appearance for Everton late into the game replacing Tim Cahill who looked like an injury had forced him off.

Sunderland however nearly got a last gasp equaliser late into the game but Tim Howard made a brilliant save from an Andy Reid free kick and Joleon Lescott made a goal line clearance from Kenwyne Jones.

But it was Everton who got the 3 points to send them back on level points with rivals Liverpool and move further away from Aston Villa, which set’s up an interesting 9 games for the race for 4th place.

Now attention move’s to Wednesday’s night massive game against Fiorentina, where it is sure that Goodison will be rocking.
