We played 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1 (if you like).. throughout the season, at no point did we change system. It was the improvement of players that changed our season, the incoming of Jelavic, Pienaar especially.

Three Everton strikers inside the top 10 most efficient Premier League strikers last season. Tolis, Jelavic and...Anichebe.

There's other Everton related analytics on the site, too. Interesting to note that our form really started to pick up when we switched to 4-5-1 and not 4-4-1-1.

We always play some variant of 4-5-1 to be honest. It's not ever a radical difference. We have five midfielders and one striker. Whether we have two deeper CMs in a 4-2-3-1 or one advanced midfielder in a 4-4-1-1, I don't think it really matters too much as we're fairly stuck in our ways.

What matters is the players really, and the tactics. We certainly had better players post-Christmas and played better football.

That Stoke long ball stat is revolting.

I'm more concerned with the fact we had the 4th highest amount of long balls but only the 14th highest success rate at it.

"And Jagielka hoofs it long to Jelavic marked by 3 defenders and the ball goes out for a goal kick/comes straight back at Everton".

The problem is you can use both those formations to describe the same thing depending on how the team lines up.

From my point of view we didn't change formation during the season.

It was even worse when we had Drenthe. I remember us, on multiple occasions, hoofing it to him.

Makes sense like. I mean most men who are 5'5 can beat 6ft+ defenders in the air.

Found this on Executioner's Bong 2011/12 deconstruction

"Jags is ranked 10th in the top flight for most accurate long balls per game (6.6) with a 57% accuracy. Heitinga’s accuracy was better ( 60%) and more accurate playing on the rightside of the centre back pair using his better right foot for the diagonal. Both were put in the shade by Gibson whose long passes hit their target 77% of the time"

Not as bad as some would make out but I too would prefer if the long balls were cut down on/ left to Gibson.
