Everton on Newsnight

Very good and never seen it before…great find.

A few mentions of religion(not related to St.Lukes) and Everton being described as “used to be a catholic club”. I suppose being formed by a non-conformist Methodist church creates that impression.
Even Peter Reid gets in on the act!

“Everton -best team since the 12 apostles but even they had trouble with their 12th man”.

The quick handing over of the league trophy from a simple table and blue tablecloth - everybody know its special... US style razzmatazz, explosions, ticker tape, podiums, posed photos under a banner that only a small portion of the crowd can see, obligatory squad jumping up and down not required.

Proper celebration.

100% agree.

Peter Taaffe - the guru of Militant - was a good Evertonian and obviously Deggsy too. Not sure if any of the other leaders were footy fans though. Anyone know if Tony Mulhearn, Terry Fields, or Terry Harrison were? IIRC one other big name in Militant was.

I always remember thinking the Militant leadership preferred us rather than lot.

'Naturally, there were a few mentions of his genuine footballing talents on the field, where his fight and determination to win every game almost matched his political enthusiasm to never give up. And he never gave up on his beloved Everton, despite the comradely taunts from his close friends who supported the red side of Merseyside.'

They wouldn't have been among the 80s Militant leadership.

I cant say I can ever remember any of them declaring for Liverpool.

I'd also say that footballer wise in the 80s, when you look back on it it was only Reid, Southall and Lineker from either team that had any social conscience.

Everton and Evertonians were and are the real deal. Despite the phonies with their BS claims - formed by Tories, played for by Tories, supported by Tories.

Was never a Catholic club.

I’M WARNING PEOPLE WITH PEACE AND LOVE not to go down the route of mixing football with religion. Never ends well.
