Everton Influence in Australia

Yeah, being an Aussie, I would love the idea of Everton bringing their brand down here. There is some untapped potential, and with the right support you could see good players bring produced.

Absoulty you just have to look at the growth of the A-league to guess the growing football trend and i think you will find the kind of attitude of most of our elite sportxs man are simular to tim cahill and i aqm sure if any youngster is given a chance he wouldnt stuff it up only problem is finding the talent in the first place

I've been thinking a bit more and there's just soo much indication it would be a good idea.

Everton is a brand name, it displays quality, loyalty and a proud history. It's something you could really take advantage out here. If you established something with the name Everton out here, IT WOULD ATTRACT QUALITY players. Simply put you would be seen as a connection to the finest league in the world and people would see this as a very logical way to be recognised by the right people in the right place. Right now our local leagues just don't have the attraction or the pulling power of something of a recognised brand, the quality is noticably low. If Everton were to come down and make some noise, let people know they were here, with Tim flying the flag you could mirror doing something like Virgin does, people love Richard Branson (generally) and they come into a market aiming to be the peoples champion (sound familiar, the peoples club?)

In Australia now, the current economic situation is better than anywhere else in the developed world, during this last financial crisis we did not enter a recession and enjoyed growth even during the worst of times, our industry is developing into something massive. There is money to be had out here, our cities have a high population density (almost all the capitals have over a million urban population each) so there would be support for anything that can really capture the publics attention.

just a bit more food for thought before work.

You say this though, but how do Everton make it pay for itself (and more)?

That would need to be looked at and unless you express to Everton (with evidence, i.e. multiple enquiries about soccer camps etc) then they're not going to look seriously at it without evidence.

i.e. people in Australia making these requests to the club.

YOU are going to need to drum up support. Its something I'm sure the club would look seriously at, but they like any business won't just jump feet first.

Can you imagine the club investing money into something like that - only to find it under utilised ? ... thats why they'd need you lot asking them to do it. That way they can get a good estimate of the scope/success of such a project

Football is certainly growing in popularity amongst school age kids out here. More parents than ever before are keen on their kids playing football rather than rugby league which is getting a bad press at school and senior level. The best Aussie kids that arn't sucked into AFL (lose good keepers there), league or union will still get noticed, there are plenty of ex-pros with connections attached to many of the club level teams.

But sadly it is still a very competitive and relatively small (in terms of population) market both in terms of potential talent and in terms of fanbase to make economic sense to really push the boat out. Most of the players and fans I meet are either European or Asian expats or sons of expats rather than second or third gen Aussies and those that are around are either Sky4 fans or follow the Roar.

Nice try Neiler, but the whole thing about Everton as a brand name is that you don't have to have gold coast, or sydeny tacked onto the name, Everton sells itself where ever it ends up, obviously to distinuigh a difference in Everton australia and Everton Fc, calling the academy/team/whatever something like Everton Juniors would be more appropriate for selling themselves.

The potential market is quite easy to indicate, I'll give you numbers and examples of my home town Perth because it's what i'm very familiar with, and the only A-league team here, Perth Glory, support is pretty much hit a total low from the peaks it had 10 years ago.(currently avg crowd has been 7,000 the last 2 years, in 1998 the avg crowd was 15,000 and the team has only been in existence since 1996)

Perth has a population of 1,658,992 Urban, making it the 4th largest city in Australia, we have one existing A-League team called Perth Glory.

Glory play their home games at Members Equity Stadium, which can hold 18,156 spectators. The record attendance for a Glory A-League match is 13,157 to see Glory host glamor club Sydney FC in October, 2005. The largest average season attendance in the A-League for the Glory is 9,374 in the 2005-06 season, while the largest attendance for any association football match at the ground was in November 1998 when 18,067 fans turned up to see a top-table clash with arch-rival South Melbourne FC.

The 1999-2000 season NSL Grand Final showed the market potential when an all-time NSL record crowd of 43,157 fans saw Wollongong Wolves beat Glory on penalties following a 3-3 draw, the oval shaped football ground Subiaco Oval had to be used.

The current A-league record is 55,476 at Telstra dome in the eastern states.

The final of the Soccer at the 2000 olympic games drew a crowd of 104,098 people.

In a game that current at it's best time in Perth can only pull 13,000 for a record attendance, previously pulled 43,000 when the sport was not even popular in a previous league (we were champions in that league, showing even minor hints of quality would multiply crowds by up to 4 times), in a city with a population of 1.6 million and with national possibilities of over 100,000 people to games, there is a market. I've only thrown this together during lunch but just giving a few numbers to give some scope to the idea.

Just to clarify, we used to have the NSL (former league) but that got canned and the A-League has recently formed creating a new competition, just re-read my post and realised it may be hard to understand some points without local knowledge.

But there's markets all over the world & a presence in Oz already by other EPL teams. The setup vs results would not add up IMHO. Don't get me wrong, it'd be nice to see, but I doubt it's an attractive place for an Academy.

Besides, if the A-League is the pinnacle of the sport in Oz, then the Socceroos should have more A-League representatives in it than it currently does. OS players that got their start did so at their own efforts generally.

Anyway, on a side note...I'm going to do a LCAB on the OzMates...understanding, of course, that the info is not a patch on the great one himself...

Kosmina back to Adelaide United!!!!
