Well, there is now another disappointment to put behind us after an all round shoddy Stoke game. However, we are toffees, and as is custom, we have a small whine and move on!
Part of our whine includes picking over the bones of another would have, should have, could have game, to try and bring to light the reasons why we lost.
Although there are many reasons why we lost today, I don't believe we deserved a win to be fair. No matter whether the ref was blind or not.
I am here however, to give my analysis of something that has been bugging me for a while.I think it could surprise some of you as it took me by surprise. (that's what she said)
Recently there has been a lot of whining about the amount of long balls that we play, and I was a part of that. For those of you that read my 'Why?!' thread, I couldn't help but have a little moan about the hoofball and the defence not knowing that the mids exist.
Now feel free to have a go at me for wasting a dire half of football, but I sat there for the first half, marking off whether or not the players were hoofing the ball. I must admit that my data is only valid for one half, as the second half I was fuming at both Moyes and the ref too much to care about my side project.
Although numbers such as these may only appeal to the Americans on here, it is my belief that the numbers don't lie. To prove that this moaning on GOT is fair, I invite you to read the numbers.
The end results were as such;
Balls played from a defender, to a midfielder or striker, whether the pass/hoof was completed or not saw the following players having the following percentages of play:
Baines - Responsible for 42% of the service out of defence
Heitinga - Responsible for 13% of the service out of defence
Jagielka - Responsible for 17% of the service out of defence
Hibbo - Responsible for 28% of the service out of defence
Of these balls played out of defence, the players hoofed the ball
Baines - 10.5% of the time
Heitinga -16.6 % of the time
Jagielka - 50% of the time (JEZUZ!)
Hibbo - 25 % of the time
If we then decided to use a weighted average system, using the percentage of service out of defence as the weightings against the hoof ratio;
Baines - 0.42 x 10.5 = 4.41
Heitinga - .13 x 16.6 = 2.158
Jagielka - .17 x 50 = 8.5
Hibbo - .28 x 25 = 7
Therefore as a collective team, we hoof the ball 4.41 + 2.158 + 8.5 + 7 = 22.068
Therefore, as a defensive unit, we hoofed the ball 22.068 percent of the time.
More than 1 in every 5 balls is smashed upfield. But is that really so bad?
YES it is that bad, as these numbers to not include clearances, these numbers are based on balls that were whacked up, when the defense was under no pressure.
The numbers also do not include crosses into the box (wtf was heitinga trying to achieve there anyway?)
What is your oppinion?
