If you're still about Pip...just checking the club share records* and Wlm Downey had 5 shares in the club between 1892 and 1910, sold one to have 4 shares then bought one in 1914 to hold his original 5 shares (5 was about average number held by a pretty big number of shareholders). Oh, and the records state he was living at Helen Road by 1896.

I love family history, Ive traced mine back to 1720 on my mumjs side in Buxton but my dads side are all from the old Islington part of Lioverpool, sadly the houses are no longer there, a few years later they moved over to Wallasey but then had to move again when the tunnel went right through the site of their homes. No football related clippings etc but I know Im an Evertonian........(y)

Start with a search on line for basic information package for free. Best way to start is to interview all your family whilst you can and get as many stories names and notes as you can and start from there.

Its mostly on line now but I had to do many visits to london to get certificates etc, never assume anything until you have proof of certificates.

Hi Pip,

A few unknowns here ... firstly do you know the date of that cutting from the Liverpool Echo? If William Downey was a founder member of Everton FC, then he would have been present at the club in 1878.As thats the year of the clubs foundation.

Now the clip from the Echo mentions that he leaves a widow of 48 years behind...So assuming he also got married around that time I did some digging on the internet for marriage records between I searched on marriage records around the late 1800's in Liverpool with William Downey as a key-word, and I found this

Marriage: 18 Aug 1890 St Augustine, Everton, Lancashire, England
William Downey - 28 Tin Plate Worker Batchelor of 43 Boundary Place
Eliza Ann Brookfield - 27 Spinster of 52 Rupert Lane
Groom's Father: James Downey, Watchmaker (deceased)
Bride's Father: John Brookfield, Waiter
Witness: Joseph Francis Broadburn; Harriet Emily Kelly
Married by Banns by: William J Adams
Register: Marriage 1887 - 1896, Page 79, Entry 158
Source: LDS Film 1656014

I dont know if its the same William Downey but it maybe worth looking at

Superb job done there lads, nice to see Blues help each other, the way it should be

It is interesting to note that St Augustine's address is shown as Everton, Lancashire and not Liverpool.....................back in the days when GP was in West Lancs.........................those guys had to be tough and strong to pick it up and move it into Liverpool:lol::lol::lol::P
