Everton has introduced a ban on bottles being taken into the seated areas at Goodison Park in a bid to protect the safety of supporters.

With effect from Wednesday's Carling Cup tie against Chelsea, fans will not be allowed to take bottled drinks to their seats inside the stadium.

Supporters who buy bottled drinks inside Goodison will be able to use the plastic cups provided.

The new rules are a change to the current regulations covering water and soft drinks. Prior to the fixture on Wednesday, supporters could take bottles of water and soft drinks to their seats but they will now be asked to pour the drink into a plastic cup, which will be provided, before entering the seated areas.

Alcohol has never been permitted in the seated areas and must be consumed inside the lounges or on the concourses.

Keeping supporters safe is a top priority on matchdays and the new ban on bottles will help the Club to reduce the risk of missiles being thrown inside the ground.

The action has been taken following incidents during the recent Merseyside derby at Goodison Park where missiles were thrown towards the pitch.

The Club is keen to take this opportunity to remind all supporters that the throwing of articles towards the pitch is strictly forbidden.

Recent incidents have put the Club in jeopardy of severe sanctions from the Football Association. Any person found committing such an act will be the subject of action by the Club which may include a lifetime ban.

Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said: "The decision to ban bottles from the seated areas within the stadium has been taken to protect the safety of supporters and players on the pitch.

"We want everybody to enjoy the match in safety when they visit Goodison Park and will not tolerate actions that endanger those inside the ground."

Ridiculous. Banning old mobile phones and lighters too are they? Or key rings and mugs sold in the club shop?

Dear me.

Absolutely ridiculous. I used to buy a bottle of water at the start of the game and drink it throughout the 90 minutes. I don't want to drink an entire bottle during half time.

FFS Everton. A bottle with no cap won't do any damage anyway.

It's also a totally unnecessary use of resources. Wasting a ton of plastic just to give out cups to everybody. A bottle without a lid is just as harmless as a plastic cup.

I'm raging here like.

This is the feller that told the Kirkby Inquiry that Goodison was so bad that he couldn't guarantee a safety certificate going forward and that it was a health and safety crisis waiting to happen....but two and half years later it's all ok as long as no plazzy bottles are thrown.

Getting money for old rope that feller.

Agree with all above - but it was inevitable. This wasn't the first 'throwing' incident at GP and if the club don't show they are doing something to address it we are in real danger of serious sanction next time.

They should just ban ruining derby games with horrendous decisions, as well as purposely celebrating right in front of the Gwladys Street as a wind up, then this rule wouldn't be necessary.

No amount of celebrating in front of the stand excuses Evertonians (quite literally) throwing their toys out the pram. If I'd have been closer to the pitch I probably would have been one of them but it's still no exuse. And lets face it, if there's any moral highground to be seized upon Liverpool fans will take it at every oppertunity. No good came from that match and the repurcussions are hitting us even now.

well that even less match day revenue, should bring those little semi circles back behind the goals that would stop them, throwing plastic bottles is lame anyway. always been a problem at are ground things getting thrown at players going back to pat jennings and even worse a bit earlier bloody stupid to be honest
