European Seedings...

But then how teams perform in Europe has no bearings on their position in the competition.

Would Celtic have to play a playoff for winning their league? Surely they'll go straight into pot 1.

Additionally, league allocation and the way uefa give the premiership 4 places, for example, would also have to come up for review if performance in Europe means nothing.

It says in the link you posted that it would be the Champions of the seven top rated European leagues.....plus the reigning CL holders going in the first group of seeds.

That would mean the league champions from England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France for certain.

Then I would think Portugal and Holland.

Maybe Russia.

Celtic wouldn't be in the top pool as the Scottish league would barely rank in the top fifteen.

It is the Champions League.

It's time it started reflecting that fact even in a limited way by favouring teams which actually won their domestic title in the seedlings.

I am sorry to labour the point but Arsenal bring the whole seeding system into disrepute.

What are they doing there?

FFS the RS are more entitled to a top seeding than Arsenal are (I feel dirty posting that...:()

I bet they are the only team in that top pool which hasn't been champions of its own country in the past half dozen years or so. In fact they haven't won the EPL in a decade.

And how do they rate the leagues? Based on how long and how well the compete in the competition.

To me it just complicates and muddies what is already a crooked competition anyway.

It's still cherry picking.

You know Kenada, I am not sure I know what you want here.

You are critical of this new seeding arrangement in your OP.

Fair enough.

You go on to say it is "designed to get the big teams into the knockout stage".

You say it as if it is a bad thing.

But in every subsequent post you make the case for rewarding those same "big teams" for their CL longevity ergo making it as easy as possible to get them into the knockout stage.

Quite clearly this new system will make it harder for the established CL hegemony to make the knockout stage because if it was in operation this year, Bayern Munich and Barcelona could be in the same group.

As could Real Madrid and Arsenal.

Personally, I think it's a splendid innovation.

The CL group stages have become stale and are usually quite predictable.

The new system will lead to more "Group of Death" type situations and that can only be a good thing.

I'm just wondering why they would bring in the change unless someone/club leaned on them. They wouldn't just change it on a whim.

The idea that PSG, Monaco, City for eg getting eliminated early doors like they have previously due to a tough draw upsets somebody. That's my bug bare.

Yet, the seedings will still be there in some form. So dropping league winners into a top pot, still means the other top seeded teams go into pot 2/3, so it wouldn't really make much of a difference as two strong teams end up coming generally 1st and 2nd in the group.

I just find it a bit of a waste of time. If they're good teams, they shouldn't be too bothered who they play.
