European Seedings...

About time. We come 5th, Spurs come 6th, they have to pre qualify but go into pot 1, we automatically qualify and go into pot 3........ I agree with City......

Me too.

It is bad enough Arsenal qualify every year from 4th place but then their regular last 16 eliminations secure them a place in the first pot.

Change was overdue.

Are about to change.

I can guess some leaning was being done by Man City's of this world, crying because theyre playing Bayern again. Not the fact they've been out of Europe for 24 years until 05.

Joke really. Trying to get all the big teams into the knockouts.

How so?

If I am reading that article right then Barcelona, Chelsea and Arsenal wouldn't have been in the top pool the other day if this new rule was in place. Nor would Manchester United if they were playing.

The system as it exists at the moment is geared to getting the big teams into the knockout stages.

City notwithstanding, their rise being quite anomalous.

So there's no reward for being in Europe consistently and doing well?

The system seems fairer as it is to me because if you're consistently in a European competition, you should get seeded higher.

Any team with no european pedigree can win their own league if they throw money at it. Then rewarding them an easier buy to the later stages of Europe's biggest money spinner, doesn't seem fair.

And I'm guessing there will be still seeds for Europe league cos it wouldn't work for that comp.

That's as may be.....but you posted that the new method was designed to make sure the "big teams" reached the knockout stages when quite clearly Barcelona and Chelsea among others would be in a weaker position if that new system was in place right now.

And no, I don't see why "consistency in Europe" should be over rewarded to the extent if currently is.

Take Arsenal as a case in point.

They are consistently in pot one when in actual fact they rarely contribute much to the overall entertainment of the CL.

Thanks to their undeserved position at the top table, they generally make it through the group stage but rarely do they progress much beyond the first of second knockout rounds.

Well done UEFA for addressing this anomaly.

Changing the seeding system in the CL and admitting the EL winners to the CL are two very progressive steps IMO.

But then how teams perform in Europe has no bearings on their position in the competition.

Would Celtic have to play a playoff for winning their league? Surely they'll go straight into pot 1.

Additionally, league allocation and the way uefa give the premiership 4 places, for example, would also have to come up for review if performance in Europe means nothing.

agree with this.

it's the CHAMPIONS league.

why shouldn't the actual champions get priority as opposed to teams who come 4th every year? - should only be the champions in it anyway

Which is why changing the seedings doesnt make sense to me. Just change the whole thing, not just where teams go to get easy rounds because they won their league. You'll still have seedings.
