ECHR has instructed the UK Government to allow prisoners the vote, within 6 months. The UK parliament overwhelmingly voted against this proposal some months ago.

Whether or not you agree if prisoners should get the vote, having a sovereign parliament vote overturned by an unelected, unaccountable body really gets my goat.

Not a Daily Mail rant, but it doesnt seem right that we are singled out, when apparently other countries in the EU just give them 2 fingers!

cos we keep doin' what they say, we respect the decisions of all these bodies and act on it whereas like you say everyone else tells them to jog on.

Feck this europe lark off before they make us all sprechen sie deutsch.

I would raise 2 as well, but I fear the PC brigade will get the Foreign Legion onto me.

well its up to this government, a conservative one. like the one that took us into europe. the same one thats been divided ever since , the same one thats misled the electorate, the same one thats terrified of taking on the banks and financial sector. sp were fooked then.

Just my opinion, but have always felt that if you are in prison it is usually because you have committed a crime deemed pretty bad! In committing such a crime it usually means you have violated someone elses human rights which is often forgotten.

Always felt that if you commit a crime then you for go any human rights.

Like I said, just my opinion.

so will they be voting for the constituency in which they are imprisoned or the place that they formerly resided in ?

collectively they could really screw up the system.

Dont think they should forfeit ALL their human rights, but my point is that is up to the UK to decide what they and cant expect.

Can I point out that the ECHR is not part of the European Union, it is part of the Council of Europe, which the UK is a founding member of. It formed in 1959. TBH as long as the offence is relatively minor, and say they were due to be released within the next parliament which they would be voting for, then I have no argument against giving the

I assume they would have a postal vote.

Thats a perfectly valid point, and an observation I was not aware of, but the point remains that they seem to have the power to trump a decision taken by a democratically elected parliament. I think your point about being able to vote if the next parliament is within their release date makes sense, and is democratic.

doesn't really answer it that mate, where I live it is postal votes, you didn't have to take that option but if you move into the area then you don't have a choice.

Just need all the 'arl arses to snuff it now so that the kids don't need to have a day off cos it's a polling station....... the day they go back after being off for 2 and a bit weeks.

.....
The human rights judges are not insisting that all prisoners have the right to vote. That leaves the Government free to decide how to implement voting rights, for example by offering the right to vote to prisoners serving relatively short sentences, while maintaining a ban for long-term prisoners jailed for more serious crimes.

That sounds "bearable" the way it's phrased there.

Non-violent and non-sexual criminals perhaps... dunno.

It's all a farce though. It's a law change that needed no change.
