Europe League: Its about respecting the competition you fought hard to get into

Just read the story about Brendon Rodgers fielding a reserve team in the europa league, and that he basically will continue to do that.

I hate it when teams do that. League Cup maybe, but not Europe. You fight all season to try and make european competition and fans will shell out hundreds, sometimes thousands traveling to support their team only to get a huge slap in the face. I wasn't brought up believing a club like Liverpool would ever take european competition so lightly. I hope they get beat hard, and then I hope Utd smack them harder then they will smack any other team this season.

It's all about money and prestige. Sadly, the Europa League isn't worth the amount of effort taken to win it or at least that's the perception by some. More money would also help the cause but that looks unlikely. I'd prefer if it was back to the old Uefa Cup format, which would cut down the amount of games and perhaps add a bit more excitement.

TBF to Rodgers he has a very very small squad atm and has 4 fronts to fight on with the Europa,League cup,F.A cup and League

The league is his priority and will determine if he stays in a job in the long run, Any injurys to major players in pointless games like tonight would be very damaging for them

This really.

I do hope in the coming years that the gap will be bridged slightly regarding the difference in prize money between the two European competitions, as there is a massive gulf at the moment.

Until that happens expect to see this trend continue.

Until UEFA grow some balls, hence change the format for both comps, starting with the canning the 3rd place CL losers dropping down to the EL. That rule alone is taking the p¡ss.

bad move if true, he needs to get results under his belt sharpish and a good long europa run may help keep the fans on his side. doubt they'll be in europe for the next few seasons after this one so it would be wise for them to enjoy it this season whilst they can. not complaining from out POV because they will be out of it straight away which will be a laugh.

he played a full strength team in the qualifiers didn't he, so i doubt he will play the reserves?

What was that Dutch side we beat for the first time ever at (their) home in 30 years? Vaughan and Anichebe both scored IIRC.

Standards of football are not to be sneered at, especially if you have a game to play against career long league rivals looming. I remember Moyes talking up the under 16's that Rodwell was captain of a few years ago in a competition in Belgium or Germany and the other sides were all under 18's and we still made the final.

The first steps in the Europa are like the first steps in the Milk cup and to an extent the first round of the FA cup. If a prem sides reserves cant beat a bunch of (at best) amateurs then they shouldnt be pros.

UEFA's fault. Ditch the qualification through failing in the CL and then we're talking. Still, I'd prefer a Cup Winner's Cup -styled competition so you wouldn't have finish fifth and qualify. That's just weird.

It was absolutely Baltic that night , it's also the only night I think I've seen queues outside the windows in the Dam

I actually thought that the red light area in Alkmaar itself was on top form that afternoon/night. Plenty of decent sights in the windows. I'd been to Alkmaar a year earlier to see England v Holland U21s but hadn't even thought there was such an area there.
