Euro 96 - Was it actually any good or have I got rose tinted specs on about it?

England demolishing the Dutch, then letting Kluivert score to deny the Scots their first 2nd round tournament appearance
England crying on pens again
ultra-likable czech team
Bierhoff supersub!

i liked the generally easy-going beered up culture, that was until Germany beat England again. in Hull a lot of the German cars were smashed up that night (how utterly stupid can a drunken yob be to do that??)

Based on pure football entertainment, I'd rank the Euros thus (World Cups are on another level for me, as they're more about so much more than just the football):

2004 (can't beat how Greece just kept putting away those 1-0's...superb underdog story)
2008 (action-packed entertainment, except the final, which was well depressing)
1996 (my nation won, and my host nation hosted...a lot of crap football but a really good tournament for me)
1992 (it hurts, but you have to respect Denmark's charge...almost Greece-levels of underdogness, except they had genuinely world-class players)
2000 (both my nations were ****e, dimly remember some good games in the knockouts)
2012 (forgotten it already..the tiki-taka backlash started in earnest here)

Was great, highlight for me though was the opening day, was at Edgbaston watching Tendulkar get a brilliant ton as we laboured to a draw with Switzerland.

Itala 90 was great. I had the sticker album....the huge one that came as a magazine over 20 weeks which you put in a big ring binder. I wish i knew where it went. I think Italia 90 and Euro 92 were probably the last tournaments of the "traditional era". Euro 96 was fun but england were not that good. In fact, we should have been knocked out before germany when spain had a good goal disallowed in extra time. I was pretty sick of the Venables love-in by then too

None of the media gave it much credit cos none of the home nations qualified but i always have fond memories of usa 94. I enjoyed sitting up wartching the late night games. Romario was in full flow and Baggio was outstanding in gettting the italians to the final.
