Following the resounding success of this year's World Cup 2014 predictor, here is the sequel!
It's back, and it's bigger and more open than ever!
Can our reigning Predictor champion @Roberto's Dream defend his crown or will he fall from grace and make way for a new messiah?
As this is going to be played over a period of nearly 2 years, it will be very interesting to look back on this, the original post, and reflect on how our own lives have changed in the interim.
Compared to the World Cup 2014 predictor, you also have a lot more control over your own fate in this tournament, finding your own unique route to glory!
If the 2014 predictor was Time Crisis, this is most definitely Goldeneye!
SCORING:
Again, 5 points are awarded for a spot on, 2 for a correct result, -1 for a wrong result. No multiplier cards (aces/jokers) are offered until the Euro 2016 knockout stage.
To make things more interesting however, three bonus points are awarded to the entrant that most closely guesses the time of the first England goal (golden goal time bonus) during the qualifiers.
THE FORMAT:
This predictor tournament is divided into three rounds.
1. The qualifiers and playoffs
A straight league in which there is no elimination at the end of the round, covering all ten matchdays and the playoff fixtures.
Every matchday entrants will predict England's result and the time they think England will score the first goal.
You can predict England to draw 0-0 or lose to nil, but you still need to put a Golden Goal time as the bonus (+3 pts) may counteract a wrong result (-1 pt).
Everyone then nominates five additional matchday fixtures of their choosing across the nine groups and makes predictions. However, restrictions do apply.
Because the outcome of some matches will be completely ruddy obvious, you cannot make predictions for qualifying games involving any of the following teams:
POT 1: Spain, Holland, Germany, Italy
POT 6: Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands, Malta, Andorra, Gibraltar and San Marino - except for the two times they play England.
This restriction does not apply to the playoff round, predictions are made for all playoff games regardless.
2. The group stage
For the start of the tournament proper, all the points gained at qualifying stage are reset to zero.
However, a headstart will be given to the top seven entrants as follows:
1st = 20 point headstart
2nd = 12
3rd = 8
4th = 5
5th = 3
6th = 2
7th = 1
Predictions are made for each game as normal, with daily updates.
The same scoring rules apply but there are no more golden goal time bonuses.
After 24 games, the league will then be split in half - those in the top half will be IMMUNE from elimination regardless, a la the SPL for an extra twist!
After 36 games, a number of entrants will be eliminated depending on how many there were to begin with.
3. The finals
For the fifteen knockout games, multiplier cards will be awarded. All surviving entrants get:
1 Ace - multiplies points by ten, use wisely!
4 Jokers - multiplies points by three
You cannot play an Ace with a Joker.
Whoever lead the table after 36 games gets an extra joker.
AND SO TO BUSINESS...
I'm going to get the ball rolling by making my predictions for Matchday 1. To enter the tournament, just put your initial set of predictions down.
Matchday 1 predictions (Matches played 7th-9th September 2014):
England's game
Switzerland 1-1 England (First England goal: 55 minutes)
Nominated games
Israel 0-2 Belgium
Ukraine 3-0 Slovakia
Estonia 1-2 Slovenia
Montenegro 5-0 Moldova
Portugal 4-0 Albania
Interested in another shot at glory?: @fatshark @Kiwi @Hellerad @Portland Toffee @billybeeru @Mikey_Fitzgerald @Bungle @Deloodid
And any others, of course! We need new blood!
It may seem complicated at first glance, but all you need to do is make the predictions and predict when England will score their first goal.
Simples!
