Am going to Etihad next Wednesday usually travel by car but after last visit going by train. Can anyone tell me which train station to go to and how to get to the stadium. Was thinking of using the tram. Someone has told me though that you have to go to a different tram stop for return journey to the city center. Any advice would be great - thanks

Go by car and park in the city centre. There you can eat and drink before the match - no chance of doing either anywhere near the Etihad - and then either walk (20 - 25 minutes) or get the tram from Piccadilly.

If you go by train, the last departure is 23.07 and you will struggle to catch this if there is extra time and really struggle if it goes to penalties.

Piccadilly's closest. It's about a 20 minutes walk to the stadium which is, allegedly, signposted, but I've never worked out which is the "official" walking route. It's much easier finding your way back because thousands of Mancs are walking in the same direction.

Catching the tram up and walking back is a decent plan.

Can go to Victoria or Piccadily and get the tram straight to the ground and jump back on the tram back to the city centre.

The traffic last week was terrible. I got caught on the M60, but I just waited as I assumed the city centre would be congested too. There was a crash at the M60/M62 junction - but it doesn't take much to cause a problem at rush hour.

Catching a tram from underneath Piccadilly station can be difficult too - they all arrive fully loaded and pass straight through. They can divert an empty one, but it can be an anxious wait as the clock ticks down. And last week a car obstructed the tramway before the game.

After the game, trams are waiting to go back to the city centre from the station at the north end - it's better to buy a return ticket. Buses are parked up ready on Ashton New Road at the south end.

Fans mingle on the trams and buses, of course. It's perhaps a 15/20 minute walk back to Piccadilly.

You must walk really slow, even with pens it will be finished by 10,30

I'm thinking straight up the Lancs & park at Piccadilly, that or as previously done park on a car park on Ashton Old Road near Ashbury (?) station, 5-10 mins walk... only probs is Mancunian way to get to there which could be a potential Jam.

Guys, if anyone is thinking of driving into the City centre then you need to be doing so by no later than 4 o'clock. It gets mightly congested around Oxford Road/Deansgate/Piccadilly when the rush hour traffic starts on any normal evening but for some reason Wednesdays (even when no matches are being played) is particularly bad with road junctions being especially jammed up by buses so much so that no one moves. It may not be a bad suggestion to try and park somewhere on the outskirts near to the tram routes and bump one of those into the City.

I'm thinking of parking up in Altrincham and getting the team in from there (I work just outside London so heading up from that direction)
