Years ago, when there were virtually no foreigners playing in any national leagues, it was the only way of seeing how good your players were in terms of international standards.

Now so few teams are made up of predominantly home grown players that you don't need international matches to compare standards.

Club finance is dictating, rightly or wrongly, that international football is much less of a priority.

One worrying feature is the influx of Brazilians into Europe - something like 150 playing for European clubs, with a view to qualifying for european passports (eg Eduardo playing for Croatia etc).
