....interesting chat on radio yesterday morning. You will recall the rant from Paul Scholes about Jack Wiltshire when he said the boy hadn't progressed since he was 17. Apparently Wiltshire heard it and got Scholes number from Gary Neville. He said he ignores criticism, but he's a huge admirer of Scholes so rang and sought his advice. They have met a few times since and Scholes has been telling him his focus has to be on team rather than himself. Bottom line is he needs to improve his assist and scoring stats.

Wiltshire has been disappointing but I would start him in Brazil. Pundits are saying Henderson should start, but not for me. I reckon he's all about energy and stamina, his technique will be exposed. The reds go back to front quickly because they have Gerrard's passing ability and forwards who can expose defenders in one-on-one situations. Henderson has the ability to bomb forward and join in. Brazil will be different and we need to adopt a more Everton approach, with players who are comfy on the ball and have ability to take it on the turn and keep possession. Gerrard, Wiltshire, Barkley axis with Rooney will provide.

Long post. Apologies.

He's just gone up in my estimations massively after hearing that, sign of a potential top player if you ask me. He could have just thought "Nah, he's a has been who hasn't got a clue" but instead chose to ask advice from one of the best midfielders of the past 20 years on how he can reach the top.

Agree on us needing to take the patient approach as well, we'd be dying on our feet by the time the 3rd game rolls around if we try and play like Liverpool against any international side because they'll just pass us to death and let us chase shadows.

Completely agree with @SpeedEFC , that is a very positive and sensible approach to criticism from a lad I had down as an selfcentered arrogant bell. Sometimes I forget he is still only 22 as he has been around for so long, hope it is a sign of good things to come for him as he technically gifted.

Not even a single decent English holding midfielder, there will be no way England will stop many well-formed attacks. You might as well throw in the towel if you have Gerrard as your defensive shield. Absolute embarrassment. It's going to be a rout against us in the second round or QF if we magically get there by facing an easy second round team. There are no easy teams in the quarters however, it's going to be another rout.

One size doesn't fit all. By the third game England could already be through. As much as I don't like them the high energy game a lot of the squad has played at Liverpool could be an effective plan A, Blitz a side in the opening 45 minutes (and with plenty of pace look to expose fullbacks and draw yellow cards) get the goals if they're there and shut up shop second half.
The idea that the heat will dominate sides is only partly true, the opposition wont be playing on a different pitch that has air con. The reason Henderson plays is to be Gerrards legs - thats it. 'Stevie-me' isn't as mobile as he once was but can knock the ball around well enough to be the fulcrum of the side picking the runs out of Sturidge and Sterling.
Can Rooney be different enough to Sturidge and by that I mean not be looking to make the same runs, or using the same space. Who plays that left flank, I expect Baines to go left back but could Hodgson play Shaw in front of him, or vice versa. It'd be a novel idea, an entire left side with left footers in it - it would be the first time in decades.

just looked at our team against italy in the euros - parker, young and welbeck started! we potentially have upgrades on all of those

And we didn't even lost that (properly)

true, that pirlo was quite good against us tho..

gerrard,young, parker, young

could be - gerrard,milner, barkley,lallana

with that we should at least have the ball for SOME part of the match!
