I always support us in tournaments, although perhaps not with the intensity or fervour of Everton and club football.

Very frustrated at Hodgson though and his seemingly blind faith in a not match-sharp Wilshere, so please excuse the rant.

Rotation Roy's big (and entirely unecessary) gamble has placed us in the really difficult half of the draw.

If like me you think Hodgson's excessive rotation was one of the factors in England's failure to beat Slovakia - especially Wilshere for Rooney, then it's particularly galling as we would have been favoured to reach the final.

There were so many warnings from Arsenal fans for him not to do a 'Wenger' when we'd qualified after two games and rotate, finish second and end up with 'Barca' or 'Bayern'. Roy wasn't listening.

Any advantage there possibly could have been in resting Rooney was so marginal as to be almost invisible against the completely unnecessary disruption caused by multiple changes.

Such a short timeframe and a maximum seven games - any benefits from rotation are extremely marginal at best if they exist at all. They had two weeks off after the league season and then went back into training, with the exception of Kane and perhaps Ali (spurs particularly long and gruelling season) they should, especially Rooney, have been fine to go and he must have been fuming at Rotation Roy's pretty crass and extremely costly decision

In simplistic and derogatory terms:

Good half of the draw - France, England, Germany, Spain, Italy
Crap half of the draw - Croatia, Poland, Switzerland, Wales

Six groups to go into the ko matches, 3rd placers to be ranked and eliminated comparing goals scored vs different opponents (with potentially uneven harder and softer groups),
Group winners paired vs strong runnerups or weak 3rd placers based on nothing other than casual luck.

The format is a long way short of ideal

It's just really bad luck on group winners Italy. I must admit i do long for the days when it was just the sixteen finalists and every game was a tough opponent. In this enlarged format so many of the games have been attack versus defence as the minnow tries to hold out by parking the bus and hoping they themselves score or get lucky from one or two half-chances in the 90.

While supporting the brave and sometimes successful underdogs' rearguard action it hardly makes for great entertainment.

I thought the qualifying fairly dull especially our group with Switzerland and even worse teams, and while there have been some good matches notably Croatia v Spain and Italy v Belgium there have been too many I wished I hadn't watched.

I've got excitement power rankings for it based on competition

1. USA World Cup
2. Everton Europe
3. USA Confederations Cup or Copa America invite
4. Everton late-stage cup
5. Everton league, early stage cup
6. USA Gold Cup
7. USA World Cup qualifier
8. USA friendly

So I guess it looks like I care more about national team than Everton, but the World Cup is only ever 4 years, and our appearances in the Copa and the Confederations Cup are even less frequent than that.

I'd imagine the majority of US based Evertonians have similar priorities mate. Chances are most of the Blues in the States started supporting your national team and then found Everton later so it would be a bit weird if it wasn't like that.

Plus, though it's a cliche to say that Americans have more of a sense of national pride than the English, it happens to be true !

We do. There's also less regional divisions as well. There are some intense MLS rivalries, but they're not nearly as bitter and storied as your average English derby.

For example, sure, maybe there are some LA Galaxy fans that are bitter that San Jose's Wondo got picked over Alan Simpson or Seattle fans that feel similar about Portland's Nagbe being on the squad while Morris isn't, but it's a small group and neutral MLS supporters normally just tell them to pipe down anyway.

Dislike almost every player in that England team intensely, and don't like Woy either.

Couldn't care less how they do.

Can one assume therefore that you might have ever such a slight leaning towards Iceland in the next round ? :):)
