Probably been discussed before, but couldnt find one.

Prompted by the Liverpool/Gerrard thread. I posted this, so discuss.

No idea. But the track record of good footballers becoming good managers is a pretty short one. In England anyrate.

Best ex England captain as a manager? Keegan maybe?

Best ex England player as a manager? Reid is a decent call I guess.

Other than going back into the mists of time.

I'd go for Joe Mercer....I know it's a while ago.

Or Bobby Robson....Still a while ago.

If only Howard Kendall had qualified for either........

Yeah, I wasnt 100% sure if Ramsey had played for England, hence my rider about mists of time.

It was more a reflection of the current view that Gerrard will be at Liverpool as boss one day, and it seemed a decent wider point of discussion without clogging up the Liverpool thread.

@Eggs mentioned Jack Charlton, which has legs certainly.

There's not many english managers these days, though. Wilkinson ebing the last englishman to even win the league.

But most of the top ones back in the day were capped as players. Robson, Ramsey, Revie, Nicholson, Mercer etc.

Even the ones who weren't, paisley, clough, kendall et al were generally quite good as players. Kendall and Clough in particular were very close to being capped.

2 according to wiki. Mea culpa there. I'd read his biography and I knew he felt he didn't get enough of a chance but I'd obviously misremebered 2 caps as 0.

Busting his knee at about 24 didnt help either.

I think we have a winner, in the modernish world anyrate.

Capped England player won the league twice, the EC twice, and about 50 League Cups as a manager.

Revie not up there, in your opinion then?

Again mate, had no idea he played for England. He was ancient when I was a kid ffs!

Revie was no Clough, imo. A great manager, no doubt, but the whole England thing kind of muddied the pool for me I am afraid.

Peter Taylor had one caretaker game against Italy. Played 4 games for England, scoring twice. Gave Gareth Barry his debut in 2000 :)
