Been contemplating a lot this past few weeks - Dad passed away recently, Covid is coming back and will undoubtedly be here for a while yet and I'm coming up to ten years in my relationship with the better half

I've started to think that maybe it's time I popped the question (life's too short and all that) - but where the balls do you start when it comes to picking an engagement ring?!

I know that she likes the Halo style - and prefers platinum to gold - but aside from that how do I decide what a 'nice' ring is?

Help!

I would imagine the hardest part is getting the correct size. You know girls always know exactly where all their rings are and if one goes missing there will be panic stations...

You should look at her other rings/jewelry to figure out what style she prefers -- modern vs traditional vs unique...round stones vs square stones vs oval stones

Does she like to wear flashy jewelry or understated jewelry?

How much do you want to spend? You might think she wants a $6K ring, but maybe she would be upset if you spent that much.

Just some tips that might help.

I'm excited for you! Best wishes!!

Don't go to high street chains.

My gf designed the ring herself. We bought the diamond on its own for 77 Diamonds and went to an independent jeweller for the band and designed it with the person who made it. I guess you could do all that in secret, or buy the diamond and let her design it? Luckily my gf isn't very traditional like that and I knew she would prefer to design it etc.

The whole thing was literally half the price of the high street, twice the quality and you get aftercare on both forever.

I had no idea how much of a rip off the high street was. They just prey on men not having a clue.

That was over 5 years ago, still not even close to getting married lol

Save a lot of pain & go and pick one together. That way she gets one she wants (& has it fitted by the Jewellers) and you get to see how expensive her tastes are.

Or you see if she has any spare cosmetic jewellery rings lying around and you take them with you, so you know you get the correct size.

Diamonds were made to be thought a girls best friend some time in the 30s when De Beers pushed an enormous ad campaign to put the idea into the heads of the public. Before then only around 5-10% of engagement rings had diamonds. It coincided with diamond producers like De Beers running a cartel withholding supply so that the price of diamonds (actually a common mineral at the time) shot up and stayed up.

Diamonds are hard, have a high refractive index but are also quite brittle. The allottee of carbon is only made naturally on earth at a limited range of depths, temperatures and pressure in the upper mantle just beneath the crust. Then the diamond bearing rock needs to be pushed to the surface to be dug out by we apes - which is why they're not as plentiful as other minerals. A diamond the size of earth has been located (by data and calculation) within a star's core. If that were ever retrieved then diamond would be cheaper and more common than sand - a bit pointless. They're useful for boring or grinding rock or teeth or attracting the eye of those primitives drawn to glittery things.

So a diamond ring just advertises to the world that you and the lady are easily manipulated.

Either spend your money (as has been suggested) on something unique and meaningful to the both of you, or if you can't afford it just make a pledge. It doesn't need to be stupid expensive* and it doesn't need to be a diamond just to satisfy De Beers. It needs to be liked by you and her. Other minerals are available, less costly, more colourful and less predictable.

*if it does then you need to question what your lady hopes to get from a relationship.

Where did the $6k come from ?

How much is "stupidly expensive"?

Other than the back room at Tiffanys 5th Ave :o
