EMRE SENTENCED!

I'd argue there's a difference between 'racism' and 'racist abuse'. Racism is actively discriminating or excluding someone based on the colour of their skin (or ethnicity, as it seems to have broadened out to). I think calling someone something nasty based on the colour of their skin is not nice, but not as bad as proper racism.

Someone calls me a northern [Poor language removed] - abuse
Someone doesn't offer me a job purely cos I'm a northerner - discrimination

imo.
I see your point to some degree in that someone can use a racist term for abuse rather than actually believing that someone of a different race is somehow a lower being and therefore treated differently in many ways. However repeated accusations of racist "abuse" throughout his career would suggest to me that Emre is a racist and does judge people on their race and as a result acts differently towards them.

Yes, that is true. Though I think they should be forced to see a shrink to confront whatever is causing them to harbour such views, rather than locking them up. Emre doesn't strike me as a danger to society.

Remember glenn roeder dismissing it like it was nothing the little rat, and people complaining about the tackle, I've no sympathy what so ever for anyone who spends their time deliberately antagonising others, through some vile means, then acts the victim

I agree and it is a very difficult thing to enforce as intention and meaning are difficult to prove from a legal standpoint. In a footballing context the punishments need to be strong as the only way people will start to realise they can't get away with it is stronger sanctions. Fining an FA or club £100,000 isn't going to change fans' behaviour, the same way giving players short bans or fines won't change them.

I can't understand why so many people become morally outraged on behalf of other people.

*written on behalf of my friend Barry who was morally outraged about people becoming morally outraged.

What would you have them do then??

Perhaps re educate them. Prison should be for crimes not ignorance. Calling someone names, no matter how distasteful, should never end up in a very costly prison sentence. We are taking the PC spectrum to ridiculous levels now. There has to be more suitable punishments, using the law courts for me is too much over this.
