From a technical perspective, If i listen to them play and I wouldn't say any of them stand out as being exceptional in terms of ability. Lots of people share this view, it's not some out there opinion. They are famed for the songwriting not amazing musicianship. Obviously the style of music they play factors in to how much they can showcase their ability but still... I would label them as average musicians (good enough for what they do).

Maybe where we differ is that I'm looking at it from a purely technical viewpoint and disregarding the more subjective 'artistic' side of what makes a good musician.

I didn't say they were average musicians because they are influenced by other artists. You asked for reasons why they are overrated from a music standpoint. The first one I gave was about them being average musicians. The second one was that they are hyped by some (not necessarily you) as being completely original, that they never copied anyone when in-fact the opposite is true.

You obviously don't agree with them but plenty of others do.

It's an hour long video... I could watch 15 One Direction videos in that time.
I'd probably agree that technically they weren't outstanding musicians. The Who, the Small faces and The Kinks were technically more proficient than either the Beatles or the Stones.
However what they created and the way they arranged it made them wonderful musicians in my mind.

Never got into Elvis. He's great, no doubt, but never really clicked for me.

Similar for Beach Boys, although I can appreciate some of their brilliance the older I get.

Oh well.

Still, my favorite is A Little Less Conversation, but his best young Elvis is maybe All Shook Up if not Jailhouse Rock, and fat Elvis to me is probably Suspicious Minds (although he probably wasn't fat yet, it was the fat Elvis era).

I find him horribly dreary at the best of times; however I've a friend who insists on putting him on at every party and doing one of his songs at every karaoke

now the sound of Elvis fills me only with murderous rage tbh
