Yeh I have the pedal powered variety as well which I ride to work only 2km. But there's a possibility we could be moving about 20km from where I work so I thought one of these might be good when I'm going in to the wind or need a break.

A mate where I worked in Hawaii (he was a nuclear electrician) converted his own mountain bike to electric. Started with a SLA battery (linear output)pack and it would do 30mph on a full charge and last about 12 miles. Then he upgraded to a lithium-ion pack (It's output is like a plateau, so more speed for longer on a single charge), kept the speed, and increased range to around 16 miles. I rode the thing and it is torquey like crazy. When you started the thing you had to keep the front end on the floor.

Get yourself a nice road bike, then the wind won't be quite such a big deal as you can get onto the drops and be reasonably streamlined. 20km isn't too far to ride really, with a decent bike you can knock that off in 30-40mins depending on traffic.

At the moment going with the wind will take me 4 - 5 mins to get to work, where as going against the wind will take me up to 10 mins, but I do have a big clunker of a mountain bike.

Get a nice road bike, it'll feel like you've sprouted wings

Powabykes are pretty good, something like a 20 mile range when assisted ( you have to pedal put turn up the juice when needed), lithium battery takes about 5p to recharge.

The newer bikes look just like an ordinary town type bike.
I'm using one for a couple of weeks to test it. My journey is 13 miles each way but the last 4 miles on the way home is all uphill so it comes in very useful.

Top speed of 15mph if just using the battery power but obviously faster going downhill
