The Missing Lineker

Ok, I want to do my bit for the environment. I want to be able to look Greta Thunberg square in the eyes and feel I deserve to bask in the reflection of her smug and superior glow. I need to tell my kids I did what I could to ensure their grandkids have parks to play in; and when out there, the air is something they breathe not wash off their clothes and faces.

I need to overcome my range anxiety and finally swap my hydrocarbon burner for a fully electric car - with vegan leather seats, a full living roof and built-in incense holder options of course.

Can I ask all you electric car owners: what’s the longest distance you’ve done in your car and what was the experience like?

(Ps: just having a chuckle no offence intended to anyone. The environment is a serious subject of course)

My mum went electric earlier this year with a Nissan Leaf, the pioneering type she is. It has a range of ~140 miles on one full charge, enough for a trip from Plymouth to Padstow (cornwall) and back with a bit to spare. She loves it. It's incredibly easy to drive. In fact, its so much easier to drive, she's yet to convince my dad to trust it and drive it himself.

You pay more up front for a leccy car compared to a traditional, but obviously you don't pay for fuel. If you charge at home which most do there's those costs (which is less than you'd pay per month for fuel) but there are a number of free fast charge points around cities now, especially at places like shopping centres or supermarkets.

Most of them start around £30,000 brand new and the ranges are about the same. Its when you get closer to 40,000 with the newest tech push range up to 200-250.

If you're on the fence, why not consider a plug-in hybrid?
Just a waste of time aren’t they. The technology isn’t there yet.
The tech is very much there already, and getting better very quickly.

I will be needing a new car in the next couple of years and have been thinking what to go for next. I would happily have an electric car if it was leased or company car, but I don't know much about them and the batteries worry me a bit. When the Leaf was first released I believe the expected life of the battery was around 8 years. I'm sure technology has improved the longevity since but I wonder how strong the used market for second hand electric cars will be.

I'll probably get a hybrid. I really like the look of the new Corrollas. They look as good as anything the German manufacturers produce and you've got Toyota's build quality.

If I could pick any car It'd be a Lexus SUV hybrid. Best cars on the road in my opinion.
