An elderly couple have unwittingly grown the "biggest cannabis plant" police officers had seen after buying what they thought was an innocuous shrub from a car boot sale.

The couple, who live in Bedford, had planted the drug in their garden.
Police officers were astounded when they spotted the plant. They have collected it and a spokesperson said it would be disposed of.

The couple will face no action from the police.

The officers took to their @bedfordlpt Twitter account to express their surprise at the find, saying: "Seized today. Elderly couple bought shrub at car boot sale, tended carefully - biggest cannabis plant we had seen!!"

I can't help thinking the old folks weren't as naive as they made out...

they've been pruning it for years...

I hope the coppers checked the poppies behind the shed

When I lived in Holland there was an apartment block (oldies) on the news, the grounds had been landscaped by the local council and it appears that it was soil that was full of seeds, it was like a feckin' sweetcorn field, they were about 10 feet tall and a machete required to get through the stuff which had grown all around the gaff.

Sure I'm being ignorant here but don't they need loads of sunlight?

Why does weed always get grown in dodgy tents in peoples lofts?

It will grow pretty much anywhere, but fairly specific hours of light are needed to make it flower well, which is why its usually grown under controlled conditions. It is quite possible to get a decent outdoor crop by planting at the right time of year, as these guys have shown quite nicely!

if it was a couple of teenagers on the dole growing it i dont think that excuse would work, should have there assets stripped and thrown in jail, the drug growing scum.

Is it even illegal to grow it? Here in NI it's grown commercially for fabric manufacture or something. I would have thought that was the same case on the mainland UK, i.e., it's legal to grow it, but illegal to then use that for stoning purposes?
