Who on here uses eBay for a few extra quid?

A mate of mine swears by it and says he's made a small fortune by offloading old clothes, games etc. I'm thinking about getting into it -

GOT'ers - fill me with knowledge (not anything else)

Now I've quit work I've made a few notes .... sorry, collected a few notes, by flogging off some of the crud I've collected over the years, old amps, spare tools etc. The money i collect is enough to fund buying more tools for my workshop without digging into my savings.

Trouble is between eBay taking a slice (10%), and then PayPal, you end up not collecting as much as you think.

I've also tried schpock which is a more local thing and more successfully, Facebook marketplace both of which are free, but trouble is you get loads of stupid public asking "still for sale?" You answer yes with an invitation to view and an explanation of all the times they could come and then hear nothing else! Gets!

Got an old laptop, games and stuff like that - if I can a few hundred quid I'll be happy.

Got another mate who goes in Charity Shops, spots something in good with decent resell value and makes good profit. Says it paid for his season ticket last year.

I use it all the time mate.

Don't sell much on there, as i can't be arsed to sort out postage and all that. But have got some bargains off there. Generally from people who don't know what they've got.

Always worth looking at But it Now things that 'Accept Offers' and offer something ludicrously cheap in the hope they just just want rid of it.
Just yesterday I was trying to buy a single phase to three phase variable frequency drive for my bandsaw, advertised at £85.03 or best offer. I offered £80 and received counter offer of £85 saying that's the cheapest they'll go.
Why put 'best offer' as an option then ffs!

I buy a lot of retro gaming stuff on eBay and this sort of thing has happened to me to. Bloody fools.

I sell loads of stuff mate, but as @chrismpw says you have to factor in the near 11% ebay takes as commission - they take commission off the cost of postage too.

The trick is all in the timing of what you`re selling.

Eg - Footy boots don`t generally sell well now, as there`s only a few games left in amateur footy.
However put them for sale late August early Sept and you`ll make more money, as everyone is after boots.

Likewise it`s pointless trying to sell warm weather clothing now.

If you`ve got clothes / footwear to sell, put the any non branded stuff into size bundles and sell it like that, as non branded gear doesn`t sell well.

You get a lot of the likes of antique dealers going on ebay to look for stuff, so if you`ve got small items of old furniture, clocks etc, sometimes you can make quite a lot of money from stuff you thought was junk.

* I don`t bother with the likes of Loot etc, as you end up with idiots trying to haggle with you after you`ve agreed a price or simply don`t turn up.

The American Ebay is great for buying clothes, the likes of Ralph Lauren and North Face about half the price you would pay in the uk, you pay a bit for the postage but it still works out far cheaper.

Even better if the exchange rate is in your favour.

Have not used e-bay for years may have another look.

Watch the inland revenue over a certain amount of income e bay pass your details over to them, class you as a business-just on turnover amounts so read the rules etc!

Used it in the past a fair bit, not anytime recently.

Was decent though, relatively easy to offload things and you can always find a bargain.

Ebay take 10% of the total price, Paypal take a further 3.5% plus 20p...or thereabouts. Bear that in mind and learn the postage rates for what you're selling and there's a few quid to be made on the side.

The main moans about Ebay are from a lot of people who don't bother to do their homework. Especially stuff like VAT when importing from abroad. And I can't stand sellers who cancel because the auction didn't hit what they expected - set a reserve, use Buy It Now or start the auction at a price you're happy with.
