One thing the Fulham game did show more clearly than any other so far was just how easy it is to go up against the Martinez type football by marking very tight and pushing right up on our back 4. The back 4 has never looked too comfortable on the ball when near their own penalty area. And its still perplexing to me that so much ends up going through Distin, who, with Baines invariably further up the pitch, often ends up receiving the ball in the LB position, with often no one coming inside to receive a short pass from him, leaving him to try a 40 yard ball down the line.

In the second half Fulham got tight not just to our back 4 but to our centre forward as well. Yet we still were pushing balls up to Lukaku when he had a Fulham CB up his arse and a few other defenders very close by.

Very tight marking has been shown as effective even against Barcelona unless Messi is playing. Unfortunately we don't have a Messi.

Our defenders have enough experience and skill to organise themselves. It has very little to do with our new style of attacking play - that appears to be about a slower build up rather than lumping it up quickly.

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, dont tell Jose this!

Its a hard one, we need ball playing defenders but distin and jagielka are solid at the back so either you get ball playing defenders and concede goals or struggle to play out from the back and keep winning.

Another positive thread. Great.

ffs

It's surreal. We're unbeaten in the league, pulled off fantastic results against Chelsea and West Ham lately, yet we lose one poxy game with a rotated squad in a secondary cup and it's pure panic stations.

We're in really good shape right now - exciting young players, an enthusiastic manager, good attacking football... if you can't be happy about Everton at the moment then it may be time to pack it in lads.

Barca are so easy to play against they won La Liga and reached the semi-final of the CL. Lets not get carried away here.

Last season we struggled at times when teams parked the bus as well. I suspect that's the case for many teams who don't have a truly world class game breaker in their squad. Hopefully now we have Lukaku up front we'll be a bit more ruthless with the chances we do create.

Couldn't agree more with this.

People need to wise up and relax.

I think we're going to have to accept that there will be teething problems for a while. Early results have been better than expected though.

Well I'm happy.

But it's not Hiesenburgs uncertainty principle, in fact it's basic sunday league stuff to mark up the back 4 so the keeper can't play the short one out. So why have a go at somebody stating the obvious, I don't think it's positive or negative it's just stating the fact of move counter move. It's up to matinez to counter the counter and so on... maybe bring in the players who can play a bit at the back.

Just sayin like

Given how badly we have started in previous years this is nearly a dream start for us. All the while players are getting used to each other, devolping their own game and learning the systems the manager wants. The league cup was a disappointment but I couldnt really ask for more as a start to a new era.
