Weird one this really and just wondering if anyone here has had the same.

So I bought a car a few years back, it was a pre reg dealer demo so although basically new I was the second owner.
Dealer did all the paperwork then the new logbook arrived in my name shortly after.

Anyway as years have gone by it's now had a few MOT'S and I have been thinking of selling it recently.
I had not advertised it but a chap asked me out of the blue if I was selling as he knew the car was still in showroom condition with very few miles on the clock.
I knew this chap from contact in the past and knew he's as straight as a dye like me so no issues there.
He's a stickler though and went through the car like a forensics expert, no problem and deal was done.

He then naturally asked to see my paperwork of which I had a documented folder with every penny spent on it plus a full dealer service history.
All good so far, he did the forensic bit once more and then says....."Errr sorry to say your chassis number in logbook does not match the car".......I thought he was taking the pee.
Nope, he was correct, the first letter of the 17 digit pin was wrong, there was a 3 instead of an S, so chassis number in logbook started with 3CC as opposed to SCC on the car.
It was ovious that DVLA when they issued new logbook at the time I bought it had made a typo, guy agreed but insisted I do the change before he parts with his money, I could understand that.
I did a bit of googling and many car forums reported this issue, ie 8 and B was a commen mistake as was 3 or 5 for an S so I called DVLA.
Spoke with the lady about the issue and to be fair she held her hand up and said yep, that's a typo. Highlight the typo on the logbook, send it back with correct number and we'll ammend it straight away. All good again.
Calls buyer and said it's all in hand and logbook should be back here and corrected in a week or so.

He then brought up the MOT issue which I'd not thought about.
He reckoned all previous MOT's will now be erased from data base because of chassis number change and that VOSA/DVSA had confirmed that......I need to contact them myself he said. I did and the bloke there said nothing will change on Data base as search is done on reg number.

Buyer isn't having it and says it'll be wiped. Spoke with the lads at MOT station and they are gobsmacked, they say cars are booked on to the test with just the last 6 didits on VIN hence mistake has not been picked up. They are not sure whether data will be erased or not.
On further asking around most MOT stations book cars online using last 6 digits unless they obviously smell a rat, with my car they obviously didn't as they knew it was 100% straight.

This service station our family have used for 30 years, straight and very decent nice people, in fact one of the family live next door but one to me. I'm now very wary of getting them a slap on the wrist for anything DVSA may level at them and hoping I'm blowing it out of all proportion.
So my question is lads, anyone here had the "single wrong digit" issue and after correction were MOT records still all fine?
Or maybe there is a tester here who could shed some light if they've had experience on this.
Not posted it on any car forums as in general the bullsh** on them is immense.
Many thanks.

No idea, but I’d tell that particular buyer to do one…he’ll be back every five minutes complaining about something else…..

It was the icing on the cake that mate. He's a decent bloke but just a nightmare to deal with. I understand the need to sort VIN but some of the stuff he tried to chip me on was pathetic lol

The buyer is talking nonsense about it getting wiped mate.

If you go online, you can check all a cars mots and mileage at the time of the MOT and also records all the failures too - free.

As someone else has said, you’ve dodged a bullet with this buyer, as he would’ve kept coming back to you with other nonsense after he’d bought it.

Rule no 1 when selling a car - don’t sell to someone you know, it’s just got potential to cause so much grief, it’s best avoided.

my wife tried selling her car 6 months ago to carzoo but they came back to her and said there’s a problem with the MOT history. Same garage done the last 4 and the mileages were 23,000-85,000-35,000-43,000
Don’t understand why the garage didn’t flag up the obvious discrepancy in the mileage. Anyway they said it was up to us to check the document but it was now too late to change. Took a £2,500 hit on the price.

Thanks for that mate, really appreciated. I doubt it will be wiped too, MOT man doesn't know how it could be so I'm just hoping that it's the case.
To be fair I didn't know the chap really, he got put on to me over a year ago by the firm that services the car and also serviced his.
The bloke put him on to me as a favour as I had said I may sell it.
He told me he is an honest and genuine bloke but a proper PITA and "you may end up kicking him up the path" lol
However you are correct and I may when this is sorted kick him in to touch, the crap he's spouted is really ludicrous, from doubting that the car is badged up properly, making low ball bids at first, doubting my word on its condition and generally as the other guy said a PITA. He is though still a decent sort hence why I've not chased him......but even Mrs is now saying enough is enough. Cheers again;)

Jeez, that's manic WTF. How the hell did that happen?

You paid them to do an MOT. That includes putting the correct mileage in. It’s not your job to check if they’ve done the job you paid them to do correctly…
