Whilst learning terms such as boss, lid, wool and scuffer from my lady wife and your good selves, I thought it only good and proper to share such wondrous colloquialisms of my region...

So here youse are pet, man, woman, like, howay man.

Enjoy.

Alreet? - Is everything okay?

Bairn - A small child, usually in reference to a direct relation.

Bonny - A term to refer to a woman who is pretty.

Canny - Referring to someone who is jovial and friendly.

Claggy - Referring to something that is sticky in nature.

Divvy - Commonly reserved for those people who are regarded as idiots.

Gadgie - An old man, usually one of fair reputation.

Ho'way! - Please hurry yourself up!

Hoy'us - Please throw that to me.

Marra' - A close, personal friend.

Nee - None.

Our kidda - Usually referring to ones brother.

Pet - A term of endearment.

Reet - Right. Very much so.

Spelk - A wooden splinter caught in the finger.

Tab - A cigarette.

Us - Me. Myself.

Wor lass - Our lass. Commonly referring to a spousal wife.

Youse - Referring to a group of people.

WTF?

To be fair, I don't talk like that more often than not. You'll find that anything outside of Gateshead/Newcastle is quite tame. You can certainly hear it, but the colloquialisms and slang are toned right down. The pit yakkers of Blackhall and Horden have an even stranger set of slang...

In my professional capacity, colloquialisms are generally frowned upon, so I've trained it out of myself.

I'll maybe say one of these by accident once a week - if that.

Just thought I'd give you all a giggle. ;)

So why are they your mates ... oh, hang on
