Dual Nationality In International Football

Player Valuation: £6m
Was having a discussion with an Irish friend last night watching Aston Villa about how he is desperate for Grealish to give up on chasing an England Cap & revert to playing for Republic of Ireland.
It got us talking about dual nationalitys and considering some big hitters such as England & France benefit from this type of thing, why dont some of the smaller national teams try and play on the "you could play at a world cup" card more with players who are maybe never really going to make it at there chosen nation or have passed that barrier of having hope of playing for someone like england for example. Its pretty much what Wilfred Zaha decided to do, i wonder if he regrets it or not.
We had a quick peak remebering back to the Jamaica squad from 1998 that played at the world cup with the likes of Robbie Earle, Marcus Gayle & Frank Sinclair all jumping on the bandwagon. Infact 11 of that squad were not born in Jamaica but had got in via the "granny rule"
Looking at the current squad there is only Marriapa at Watford & Bobby Reid at Fulham who were in the last squad not born in Jamiaca. But i did see Ravel Morrison made a squad but never got picked.
But why dont they go furthar, i have tried to comply abit of a list of players who are very unlikely to be anywere near the national team due to age and ability but could play for the Reggae Boyz, i could do with abit of help as there surely is many more out there.

At the moment i have found

Dwight Gayle - Newcastle
Troy Deeney - Watford
Mason Holgate - Everton
Liam Moore - Reading
Kasey Palmer - Bristol City
Isaac Hayden - Newcastle
Izzy Brown - Luton
Andre Gray - Watford
Demari Gray - Leicester (Although you could argue he will still have hopes of playing for England one day)

Surely there must be more around atleast the premier league & championship who they could attempt to approach

Maybe they prefer to spend International breaks doing nothing, rather than travelling all over the world playing for a team they dont really care about?

Or the most likely thing is that they consider themselves English, thus playing for a country most probably have no real ties to means nothing to them.

Outside of the World Cup international matches for those countries are incredibly low level as well. For someone playing in the PL the thought of turning out for a match between Jamaica and Antigua probably isn't that great.

It's different than Rugby for example where not being in one of the best international teams mean you aren't playing at the pinnacle of the sport thus players will use residency to qualify. In football the club game is at least equal but honestly probably higher level.

Play for a team without getting paid, on terrible pitches and the chance of being injured, thus jeopardising future earnings. Fly there and back to the UK on a standard flight cramped in economy because thats all the national association can afford.

Can't think why they'd duck it.

There will be a lot of this in the near future, esp with the home nations. Not sure of correct figures, but something like 60% of youth players registered with the English FA (u18 and younger iirc) have dual nationality, and something like 40% of these has triple nationality.

Grealish would be wise to come back to the boys in Green considering Southgate won't even think about playing Maddison currently. Or he could move to a "Big 6" club and suddenly be good enough like Wan-Bissaka
Think Wan Bissaka would have been in the squad if he was still at Palace, played for u21s so natural progression. Hopefully Grealish might get a chance in the next squad.

I highly highly doubt Southgate has the stones to drop the RB from the PL champions to be replaced by someone playing for Palace. Even if he thought Wan-Bissaka was better, he wouldn't have done it had he not made the move to United. It's the way it goes in the England set up.

Dont think people give enough credit to whom Southgate picks. Obvuously the majority of the squad will come from the top clubs, thats where the better players are but he will give others a chance. He doest allow the media to pick the squad as previous regimes did.

Surely if they sent them a Cool runnings DVD, they would fill with Jamaican pride

I was reading up on this and i think Grealish has burned his burned his bridges, i think at full level you can only apply for one "switch" so he wont be able to switch back

Not necesarilly jamaica but on the ireland front. I see Kieran Dowell is on this list of players eligible to play for ireland due to the ruling. I wonder if Jonjoe Kenny is also. With a name like that he surely has some irish in him

Seen no evidence of that from Southgate at all. The latest squad included players from Burnley, Bournemouth, and Villa, and he picked Keane and Rice ahead of Gomez and Winks.
