"But that was one of the most significant captain performances I have seen in a live game. What Phil Jagielka did in the face of adversity, embracing responsibility and showing the way - it was a phenomenal performance."

We're not Wigan fans,we know the game here, don't try pulling the wool over our eyes eh?yeah Jags had a great game, but I thought Naismith again was more of a skipper, going round geeing/encouraging especially the likes of Garbutt, its a pity we've had to wait til mid March for a "captains" performance from Jags IMHO.

Nah. That was a captain's performance from Jagielka. Took it upon himself and decided to make things happen.
Kept Garbutt's head up during that torrid first half he was having, and was a rock at the back.
Not saying anything I disagree with at all there

Jags to be fair has begun to get back to what we're more used to seeing from him, and I still feel that him being given the captaincy by the outgoing Moyes was a move designed to hurt both the player and the team. Jags, bless him, isn't anything remotely near a John Terry or dare I even suggest Stevie Me in terms of being an on-the-field leader... I hasten to add that both JT and SG are despicable characters at best, while Jags appears to be an all-round nice guy.

Call me a conspiracy theorist, but Moyes knew all about Jags and must have known he was not a natural successor to even Phil Neville, so for me, Moyes appointing Jags as captain was akin to an act of sabotage.

The issue for me though is that El Bob didn't choose to sit down privately with Jags and suggest that he as the new manager wanted a wee while to assess the squad and appoint his own captain... who may or may not have been Jags. Had that conversation taken place and expressed constructively to Jags, I believe he would have understood the managers position and would have accepted the decision had it been to appoint someone else. Jags is a senior pro in the team and should have been big enough to accept that if the manager deemed another character better suited to being the official captain, he could still have had input as a senior member of the squad.

Difficult thread to reply to as you're raising a few issues.

First of all, yes I am sick of Martinez spinning and outright lying to us. We're (mostly) reasonably observant football fans and should not be fed spoonfuls of crap and told it's some tasty, tasty Nutella.

Also I think Jagielka is a poor captain. Moyes appointing him when he surely knew he was out the door was a sly move and one he shouldn't have made.

That said, Jags is a top pro and was actually excellent both as a player and a captain, on Thursday. So hyperbole aside, Roberto isn't wrong.

some people hang on every word Martinez says in his press confrences, picking bits out of it and turning it into something completely different.
its something different every day, from slagging evertonians off to slagging players off to pulling the wool over peoples eyes,
what next?

The thing is this though. Of all the players in our squad, who are likely to realistically be better captains now than Jags.
Not exactly like we have a raft of names to pick from.
Naismith has a mouth, but really isn't the kind of quality we want to have as a starter, indeed if Osman and some of our other attacking players were fit he wouldn't be as much of a regular.
Baines is quieter even than Jags
Barry has experience, but is getting on and this is his first year signed on with us permanently.
Macca and Stones are both great candidates for the future.
Stones is a born leader and Macca isn't afraid to get in the face of a referee or chat to his own players.
But they need some more experience before they can draw on the respect of all their teammates as a captain
