The former Olympic bronze and Commonwealth gold medallist has died. In her day she was a pin up of UK Athletics and the media. Formerly married to Bill Hartley before a divorce she had lived in Aughton but moved to south Yorkshire.

After retiring from athletics Hartley married Andrew Robert Wass, better known as comedian and actor Bobby Knutt. As Donna Hartley-Wass, she competed for several years on the UK women's body building circuit, winning the National Amateur Body Building Association's "Miss Britain Physique" trophy in 1988, having placed third the previous year.[SUP][4][/SUP] Her bodybuilding career was short-lived and for several years after that she ran a Line Dancing School in Sheffield near the family home. Hartley-Wass featured on the front cover of Health & Strength Magazine.[SUP][5][/SUP]
Hartley trained at a Sheffield health studio jointly owned by Bobby Knutt and Marti Caine, another local television and stage comedienne. Under the guidance of the health studio manager Peter Ormondroyd, himself a national junior bodybuilder. Hartley achieved national success very quickly on the women's Bodybuilding circuit.
She died while sunbathing in her back garden on 8th June 2013, being discovered by her husband of 26 years.[SUP][2][/SUP]

Christ, 58, that's shocking. I remember her from meets yeats ago

RIP

her ex, Bill still lives at the former home, Hartleys Farm, Robbins Island, Northway. She was a bit of a doll until she took up body building, she got the muscles but lost everything else, including her bust, it was scary

Makes you wonder doesn't it? We all know what some of the athletes from that era were like. The east Germans stole many a medal back then. Wouldn't be surprised if a few of ours didn't think "if you can't beat them..."

I don't think for one minute that she took drugs when she was running but when she went into body building she must have taken something, what ever it was it didn't come from Charles Atlas

Quite. I think there was probably a lot taken back then without appreciating the longer term consequences, both mentally and physically. Shame that she's passed away so young.
