Junaid Khan: Lancashire sign Pakistan paceman for T20 campaign

Junaid Khan rejoins Lancashire as they try to win the Twenty20 Blast for a second time after their 2015 win

Lancashire Lightning have signed left-arm pace bowler Junaid Khan for this summer's Twenty20 Blast.

The Pakistan international helped the Red Rose county reach Finals Day during two previous spells at Old Trafford, in 2011 and 2014.

"It would be great to get back there again this year and win some more silverware," the 27-year-old said.

Junaid has played 22 Tests, 56 one-day internationals and nine T20 games since making his Pakistan debut in 2011.

His best T20 performance for Lancashire was against Birmingham Bears three years ago, when he took 4-12.

Junaid, who also played for Middlesex in 2015, will be available for all of Lancashire's group matches and the knockout stages of the competition.

"The whole club made me feel incredibly welcome when I played for Lancashire in 2011 and 2014," he added.

"The experience I gained in those years has enhanced my ability to swing and seam when bowling."

Lancashire head coach Glen Chapple described Junaid as a "very popular member of the squad" who would add experience to the attack.

"He should be able to settle in really quickly as he already knows a lot of the squad and his death bowling will be a huge asset for us," he added.

Analysis

BBC Radio Lancashire's Scott Read

Junaid's previous two spells were a great success.

He won seven out of his eight appearances in 2011, taking 12 wickets in the process. Three years later he took 19 wickets in 10 games reaching Finals Day on both occasions.

As a left-arm fast bowler he can add an extra dimension to Lancashire's attack. He's a fabulous death bowler and has shown he can help defend small totals and help win games.

AGAINST MODERN CRICKET

County Champioship taking place more or less completely in April, May and September.
Too much whack it and leg it cricket.
Hants will definitely be relegated this year.
Bah!

Think it's partly due the scheduling of the Champion's Trophy.

As I said, future England player.

England Lions: Liam Livingstone matches feat achieved by Kevin Pietersen

Livingstone recently signed a new deal until 2019 with Lancashire

England Lions lost their second four-day match with Sri Lanka A, but batsman Liam Livingstone matched a feat only Kevin Pietersen had achieved before.

Livingstone joined Pietersen as the second batsman in the 35-year history of England B, England A and England Lions cricket to score a century in each innings of a first-class match.

The Lancashire 23-year-old scored 140 not out, following a first-innings 105.

But Sri Lanka squared the two-match series with a three-wicket victory.

After Sri Lanka followed England's 353 with a score of 548, the visitors were bowled out for 284, leaving the hosts requiring 90 to win from the final day's evening session.

Malinda Pushpakumara, who took 13 wickets in the match, hit the winning runs, while Surrey wicketkeeper Ben Foakes claimed his 10th dismissal - five in each innings - which broke the previous record for the Lions and their predecessors, set by Steve Rhodes against Transvaal in 1993.

Lions head coach Andy Flower said: "They were good dismissals - it's not like they were all straightforward nicks. A number of them were standing up to the wicket, both stumpings and catches, and Ben took one of the best catches I've seen from a wicketkeeper diving to his right - and that was in the 128th over.

"The other stand-out was Livingstone. Some of the things he's been working on in the training camps seem to have come to the fore in his play of spin. It was a really great performance on a typical sub-continental wicket."

England Lions' five-match one-day series with Sri Lanka A starts in Dambulla on Friday.

Can't wait for the Ashes.:)

Cricket to introduce sendings-off & bat restrictions after MCC approval

Cricket will introduce sendings-off, award penalty runs for poor behaviour and limit bat sizes after lawmakers the MCC approved the changes.

Player offences will be measured across four levels and punishments range from giving away five runs to being dismissed temporarily or permanently.

Batsmen will also now not be run out if their bat loses contact with the ground after being grounded behind the crease.

The new laws will come into effect from 1 October, 2017.

MCC (the Marylebone Cricket Club) is the guardian of the laws and spirit of the game, and has a world cricket committee - established in 2006 - of 12 current and former top international players which made its recommendations last December.

This is the first time a new code of laws has been written since 2000.

The mode of dismissal of a bowler running out a batsman at the non-striker's end has also been changed.

Bowlers will now be able to perform the run-out "to the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball", rather than before entering his or her delivery stride, as was the previous rule.

When would players be ejected?
Offences and punishments include:

Level 1

  • excessive appealing
  • showing dissent at an umpire's decision
  • Punishment - following an official warning, a second offence will result in five penalty runs being conceded
Level 2

  • throwing the ball at a player
  • making deliberate physical contact with an opponent
  • Punishment - five penalty runs being conceded
Level 3

  • intimidating an umpire
  • threatening to assault another player, team official or spectator
  • Punishment - five penalty runs being conceded and the removal of the offending player for a set number of overs
Level 4

  • threatening an umpire
  • any other act of violence on the field of play
  • Punishment - the removal of the offending player for the remainder of the match
"We felt the time had come to introduce sanctions for poor player behaviour and research told us that a growing number of umpires at grassroots level were leaving the game because of it," MCC head of cricket John Stephenson said.

Bat edges and depths to be limited
Following much debate in the past few years over bat sizes, and a call for restrictions from the International Cricket Council in June, specific size limitations to the edge and depth of bats will be added to the laws as the committee believes "the balance of the game has tilted too far in the batsman's favour" - with some mis-hit shots clearing the boundary for six.

Bat edges will have a maximum allowance of 40mm and bat depths must not exceed 67mm (60mm plus an allowance of 7mm for a possible curve on the face of the bat) and the width can be up to 108mm.

"The bat size issue has been heavily scrutinised and discussed in recent years. We believe the maximum dimensions we have set will help redress the balance between bat and ball, while still allowing the explosive, big hitting we all enjoy," Stephenson said.

While a bat gauge will be used to enforce the new restriction in the professional game, a moratorium will allow amateur players to continue to use their existing bats which may be in breach of the new law.

A bit confusing with two T20 competitions planned in a season.

City-based Twenty20 tournament moves a step closer as ECB reveals more details

Questions remain around where the tournament will fit into the schedule, and which of the world's best players will be available.

The ECB insists it will not impact on the T20 Blast, which last season featured the likes of West Indies star Chris Gayle and New Zealand's Brendon McCullum.

"We think there's a lot of room for growth in the Blast," said Harrison. "It's done a tremendous job at bringing in a county cricket audience.

"But the evidence we have suggest cricket exists in a bubble and we've got to get outside this bubble."

He added the tournament could "absolutely" rival the IPL,

'It will be a roaring success' - analysis
Former England captain Michael Vaughan on BBC Radio 5 live

Cricket needs that moment in this country that changes the way we talk and think about the game. It's got to be good for the game.

The key to the Big Bash is being seen. Every single person in Australia can see every single ball. Cricket is now the number one sport in Australia.

Where the Big Bash has had huge success is they make sure the fan experience is key, and almost the cricket is secondary. The fans, and it's about 50-50 between men and women, and the kids, they all go home having had a great time.

The only thing in terms of a county perspective is this new tournament will be a massive juggernaut, get loads of marketing and the county game may say: 'Why didn't we get that support?'

This board of the ECB, I feel, are very visionary. You are going to get some terrific teams. I believe it will be a roaring success.

England Test captain Joe Root on BBC Radio 5 live

It's a very good idea. It's great to see it's been given some thought. Look at some of the other competitions in the world and they've been very successful.

Lancashire playing their first match of the season today against the might of Cambridge. Lancs first innings 338-6 declared. Hameed retired hurt for 7 after being struck on his hand. In reply Cambridge 15-2, Anderson with both wickets.

Not a bad start for Lancashire against Essex. Lancs made 319, Hameed 47. From 160-6 new signing Dale Vilas counter attacked, eventually out for 74. Another fine stand for the last wicket put on 51. In reply Essex stumbled to 39-2.

Excellent day for Lancashire. Bowled out Essex for 159, nice to see Stephen Parry getting off to a good start with 3 wickets, Anderson also took 3. In their second innings Lancs 114-1, 274 ahead. Should hopefully win tomorrow.
