Ok so just listened to a debate on Radio 2 about if staffys are wrongly demonised. i cant answer that defintively but i think the problem with violent dogs is usually to do with the other end of the lead. I dont have a staffy but i do have a terrier (jack russell x westie) and i know that she can be a bitch (excuse pun) to other dogs, so .. do you have a dog? what do you think of the staffy issue? do ypou have a staffy related story? or simply post a pic of your 'mans best friend'.. i'll post a pic of mine when i get home.

lol made me smile that Bryan. up until i got this latest dog "Dotty" i didnt like small dogs!i had a Black Labrador called Tyson who was nearly 15 when we lost him (broke my fecking heart losing him) and the wife says to me about this dog that was being neglected by her owners etc (you all know the dog neglect stories) well i could not bear that so i said we'll have her. i never thought to find out wjhat type of dog she was! well we have had her for 5yrs now and i am totally smitten with the "small" dog !! She makes me smile when i'm in a grump and keeps me company when the missus is working. So now yes i'm a small dog lover!

I don't have a dog but my friends have a staffy that is perfectly trained and well behaved, they have a couple of little girls and they follow the dog and pick it up and play with it constantly and there have never been any issues, I've never had an issue with letting my kids play with the dog either. Like you say I think the main issue is the person at the other end of the lead, I see tons of them from my office walking up the high street everyday in their chavved up groups deliberately antagonising one another dogs, the majority of them have made no attempt to train the dog and their are purely a status symbol for some. Unfortunately the media scaremongers everyone to death and in one foul swoop tarnishes all these dogs with the same brush.

If a dog has a good owner that has taken the time to train it and teach it right from wrong, as well as caring for the animal and spending plenty of time with it then they are fine, if knobheads that make no effort to train them and treat them like dirt are allowed to own them then there will always be a problem. Unfortunately there are so many private breeders that trying to bring in or enforce any sort of law that means you have to show you are fully capable of looking after that dog before you can own it is unlikely to happen.

To be honest, they aren't my favourite type of dog by a long stretch, but it is soley down the owner and how they train the dog as to any terror these dogs cause.

Yes every dog has it's own personailty, but with some training and time to get to know your dog, you'd know exactly how to handle, what are the signs of discomfort and what situations are appropriate. Don't let your dog free that the park with no muzzle if he/she's prone to twist off a bit, even with the best training.

I would say the owners are a big part of it, plus the dogs history.

I have 2 spaniels, like kids to me. Dull as dog sh*t but wouldnt harm a soul.

Nail hammer head there avaseer, i know mine isnt brilliant with dogs she doesnt know, nervous thing with her from her bad start i think. so when we see another dog she doesnt know we put her on the lead. simple. after she meets the dog she is fine running and playing frisby with them no problems. its just that first meeting she has to be on the lead.

All these bulldogs are alright...until they savage someone.

I'd put them all down. Not one of them is worth a human getting attacked, let alone anything else.

You clearly dont know dogs mate, the owner should be put down if anyone's to blame.

Staffies by nature make great family dogs, which is one of the reasons why they're so popular. They're sociable, good with kids, even tempered, like attention and make good pets. They're really nice dogs.

They get a bad press because there are too many complete bells that own them and they've become something of a scrote's fashion accessory.

They shouldn't be confused with pitbulls, which are a separate breed bred for fighting.

I know some owners are to blame too. But those amimals are bred to inflict pain. I'm sure most bulldog owners are responsible and most bulldogs dont, in fact, inflict pain throughout their lives. But it's in their nature and in the wrong circumstances they can cause the type of damage only certain terriers and large dogs can match.

Why people cant just have a collie I dont know.

I have a Staffy , and he is the most lovable dog amongst kids and adults alike. All dogs have the natural instinct to hunt and fight etc , but if they aren't led down that path by the owners it is soon removed.

Ok there are instances in dogs turning in a second, but if you analyze the situation long and deep enough you will probably find a degree of provocation is involved.

Its all about ignorant people owning what let's face it could all be prospective killing machines. It is the owners that need educating not the dog.
