Does anybody still need aircraft carriers?

The notion that we need armies (and Trident) to maintain peace always reminds me of this wonderful Blackadder scene.

My two penny worth. its not the fact of getting two carriers that annoys me and i do believe we need them. where i draw the line is the industry ripping off the government in the costing of them.they recently shot themselves in the foot when the company developing the catapult system suddenly decided that they had the government over a barrel and increased there price dramatically. the government turned around and said "ok we wont have a catapult system , we'll have a ramp instead!" LOL you money grabbing tawts now whos indespensable? LMAO

pisses me off more when they let ships like the Invincible goto mothballs when they should be part of the maritime museum. It was built in my home town and we campaigned to have it kept in england as a museum but the government didn't listen. At leats that way it could have generated some revenue .

It is baffling really how contractors always seem able to ramp up prices on government contracts. I mean who draws up these things? You have a price, you have a spec and you have a deadline. If the supplier doesn't meet those things then it's their problem not the purchasers.

It is very sad, but unfortunately true. We also need a police force to stop trouble in city centres at night which is also sad.

The problem bruce is that usually the admirals that are on the projects usually want to 'feather' their own nest so when they leave they suddenly have board membership on the companies that 'win' the contracts. rotten to the core.

We need aircaft carriers as the RN needs stable platforms on which to play volleyball, sunbathe and fly kites from.
